Top 5 Most-Awaited Upcoming CNG Cars In India

As the price of petrol continues to rise, more people turn to alternative options such as electricity and compressed natural gas (CNG) powered vehicles. The affordability and availability of CNG vehicles often make them the preferred choice for those who want to steer clear of petrol. Taking a cue from the growing popularity of CNG vehicles, car manufactures are coming up with CNG variants of their best cars. Just between FY2020 and FY2021, there was a 2% boost in the market share of CNG cars. Maruti, Tata, Toyota and Ford have already announced a host of new upcoming CNG cars in India.

Here is a list of 5 upcoming CNG cars we are eagerly waiting for:

1. Maruti Suzuki Dzire CNG

   

   Maruti has been one of the first companies to jump onto the CNG bandwagon in India. The company already has a suite of CNG powered vehicles such as the Celerio, WagonR, S-Presso, Eeco, Ertiga, and Alto already available to customers. Maruti has announced it will launch a CNG variant of one of its most popular cars, the Dzire.

   The CNG model will feature a 1.2 L petrol engine along with the CNG kit. The petrol engine provides 89 bhp with a 113 Nm peak torque. The CNG variant of the car might have a 10% dip in torque. We expect the outer appearance and features to be the same for the CNG model and the one currently in the market.

2. Maruti Suzuki Swift CNG
   

   

   Spied testing images also confirmed that Maruti was soon to release a CNG version of its well-loved Swift. According to the leaked document, the specifications for the CNG equipped variant of both Swift and Dzire are likely to be similar. The car is also likely to have a 1.2L engine with a lower torque value, however, the CNG option will undoubtedly increase fuel efficiency.

3. Tata Nexon CNG

   

   Tata was recently spotted testing out a CNG variant of the Nexon, its sub-4 metre SUV. This comes after the company’s announcement that it will introduce CNG variants to its entry-level hatchback and SUV range. The Nexon already has an EV variant and the launch of the CNG model could make the car one of Tata’s most versatile SUVs.

4. Toyota Innova Crysta CNG

   

   The CNG variant of the Toyota Crysta was supposed to be launched last year. The bi-fuel variant of the car was spotted in the final phases of its testing in January 2020. However, the company was unable to launch the variant due to the pandemic. Now, with things going back to normal, we may look forward to a CNG Toyota Crysta soon.
   The CNG variant will have a 2.7-litre, naturally aspirated four-cylinder petrol engine. When running on petrol, the Crysta gives 164 bhp and has a 245 Nm of peak torque. As with most CNG cars, the Torque value might take a 10% hit, but the fuel efficiency will improve.

5. Ford Aspire CNG

   

   Ford offered a CNG variant of its Aspire back in 2019. The CNG variant was ultimately discontinued by Ford. However, with the rising popularity of CNG vehicles, the company is likely to bring back the option.  The CNG variant of Aspire will generate 85 bhp and have a 119 Nm peak Torque.
