Volkswagen India has confirmed that they will be shedding 7 speed DSG Gearbox in the Polo and Vento to 6-Speed manual and 6-Speed conventional torque converter.
- The major effect of this change is that both the cars will now be more affordable to people has DSG clutch is way costlier than a manual and AT. To meet with the BS6 norms both Volkswagen Polo and Vento are losing the diesel option and will be strictly petrol. This made Volkswagen think to make the cars cheaper to appeal to a wider audience.
- Volkswagen Passenger Cars India director Steffen Knapp says, “We believe there’s a room for a TSI in the lower price segment and you can achieve this with a 6-speed manual transmission, which lets you move the price down. In the future, we want to cater to a wider range of people, and this you can achieve with a normal automatic – there’s no question about it. Our idea is to increase our volumes to 3 per cent, as you know. Therefore, we need to make ourselves more accessible, and this you can reach via this strategy.”
- There are currently no price reveal or leaks but we expect the price to go down 60,000-70,000 INR for the manual transmission option and 40,000-50,000 INR for the AT one.
- The currently available DQ200 DSG clutch used to haver jers and was not as smooth as a conventional AT as the Indian roads precise control of clutch due to heavy traffic. This could also have been one of the reasons Volkswagen decided to shift to other alternatives and make the cars cheaper at the same time hitting two birds with one stone.
- The new BS6 engine that Volkswagen Polo and Volkswagen Vento will get is the 1.0 Litre TSI which outputs 115 horsepower and 200Nm torque.
Volkswagen is confident in the new 1.0 Litre TSI engine stating that these are the perfect combination of high torque and good fuel economy.
