Humanities’ focus shifting towards the environment and saving it, new emission norms are coming in to play from 1st of April this year. BS6 emission norms with BS6 fuel is a drastic change from the existing BS4 emission norms.

The changes are more prominent and noticeable when updating the engine from BS4 to BS6 emission norms. Changes range from the fuel pump to the exhaust system. The fuel on which BS6 cars will be running also experiences change be it diesel or petrol.
BS6 Emissions
BS6 is way stricter norm than BS4. All the harmful gasses emitted from the exhaust of the car are drastically reduced. Here are some reading of BS4 and BS6 exhaust emissions.
Fuel Type | Pollutant Gases | BS6 fuel | BS4 fuel |
---|---|---|---|
Petrol Passenger Vehicle | Nitrogen Oxide (NOx) Limit | <60mg> | <80mg> |
Particulate Matter (PM) Limit | <4.5mg/km | – | |
Diesel Passenger Vehicle | Nitrogen Oxide (NOx) Limit | <80mg> | <250mg> |
Particulate Matter (PM) Limit | <4.5mg/km | <25mg> | |
HC + NOx | 170mg/km | <300mg> |

Reducing emissions require cutting technology and a lot of research. Manufacturers have successfully converted or about to convert their engines to new BS6 fuel standards.
According to the new BS6 fuel, petrol vehicles are permitted to emit only 60mg of NOx which is 25% fewer NOx levels. NOx in diesel is reduced from 250mg to 80mg which is about 3 times less than old norms.
Changes in Fuel
Fuel for BS6 has also seen some changes. Most prominent change being in the diesel fuel. Now the diesel fuel has 5- times less sulphur than BS4 fuel. This will dramatically reduce the SOx (Sulfur Oxides) from the exhaust of the vehicles.
The new BS6 petrol will have a higher octane number than before, in order to reduce the overall carbon and other harmful gasses footprint from the exhaust.
Cost of the Change
New BS6 is now available at some fuel stations in few cities the cost remains more or less the same. This is done for a trial period until the official rollout of BS6 norms. After that, it might change after the official launch of BS6, considering the increased processes involved in refining the BS6 fuel.
