The Ministry of Roads and Highways has recently implemented updates to the existing registration plate regulations to prevent confusion and fraudulent activities. These revisions follow the 1989 amendment.

Under the new regulations, driving a newly registered vehicle with a paper-printed temporary license number will be considered an offense.

Temporary registration plates will now feature red letters and numerals on a yellow background. Dealer vehicles, on the other hand, will be required to display plates with white letters on a red background. Electric vehicle owners are still allowed to use their previous number plates, which consist of yellow letters/numerals on a green background.

The Government of India, specifically the Ministry of Road Transport and Highways, the nodal ministry, has established stringent specifications and enforcement rules for the new High-Security Registration Plates (HSRP). States have recently begun implementing these plates in a phased manner. This standardisation, coupled with rigorous enforcement, is anticipated to bring about significant changes in vehicle registration and enforcement processes across the country.
