The 2020 Volkswagen Polo GT TSI: What To Expect?

The Polo GT has been around for a long time now. It has ensured that people know what the car is all about.

It’s more than just a hatch or a powerful engine wrapped in a hatch chassis. The car exudes performance, class and sportiness, all in one. The new 2020 Polo is coming to India and was about to launch soon. However, due to the Coronavirus pandemic, the launch had to be shifted further.

In the BS6 era, when hot hatches like the Baleno RS and the Abarth Punto are shelved, the Polo is here to make you go crazy with its performance. However, only in petrol.

So, what can be expected from this hot hatch which is going to stay here for a long time? Let’s find out.

The 2020 Volkswagen Polo GT TSI gets an engine makeover. The 1.0-litre turbo petrol engine makes 113 hp and 175 Nm of torque. It is a 3 cylinder engine on work here. The engine is BS6 compliant and comes mated with 6-speed manual gearbox as standard. This comes as a change from its BS4 predecessor which had a 7-speed automatic transmission only.

The car’s dimensions remain the same at 3971x1682x1478 (LWH) with a ground clearance of 175 mm.

On the outside, there aren’t any major upgrades. The front gets a honeycomb grille, with chrome finishing, which gives the car more character. GT badge on the grille just adds onto the car, making it turn heads just because of the badge. Bumper gets a slide cladding which adds to the sportiness of the car even more. Donning the front are the headlamps with a finish, combined with the fog lamps.

On the sides, the car preserves that stance from the BS4 model. It comes with 16-inch alloys with disc brakes on the front and drum brakes at the rear. Overall, you won’t see any major changes in the car on the outside. The spoiler at the rear, the L shaped tail lamps and diffuser that sits below ooze good looks.

Interior | 2020 Polo GT TSI

Interiors are the way they should be in a Volkswagen car- minimal and to the point. The new addition is the 6.5-inch touchscreen infotainment console. It comes with Android Auto and Apple CarPlay. Moreover, there isn’t anything new to mention over here.

Most of the interior is pretty much similar to the Highline Plus model of the Polo. However, an increased number of GT branding might do the job.

Will It Be Worth It?

The Polo GT is known for its performance. That ‘GT’ badge alone becomes its selling USP. While the BS6 version still has the badge, many components are gone. Firstly, the DSG transmission bids adieu, which make the car manual transmission. Moreover, what’s even saddening is the fact that BS6 norms, have forced Volkswagen to shelve the TDI diesel model.

So, if the consumers till throng to buy this hatchback and if it still contains the ‘hot’ prefix, is yet to be seen.
