Toyota Corolla Cross | Why India Needs It?

The Corolla Cross is a crossover SUV based on their best-selling sedan Corolla. Toyota has made various versions such as hatchback & station wagon based on their sedan. Corolla was also a popular sedan in India, but the sales declined due to the high price and the SUV demand. But why do we need the Corolla Cross in India:

Growing SUV market

The market trend has significantly changed globally; it has shifted from sedans & hatchbacks to SUVs. In the past few years, every brand has launched new products for India’s compact & mid-size SUV market.

Toyota has had a stronghold in the premium SUVs with the Fortuner, but they did not offer any other SUV from their lineup except the Urban Cruiser & Hyryder. These two SUVs are collaboration products, so it makes sense to launch the Corolla Cross in India.

Spied Testing in India

Toyota Corolla Cross spotted

Corolla Cross was introduced more than a year ago in Thailand and later sold in other markets as well. It shared a similar taillight design along with identical design proportions. But it never made its way to India, although it was spied testing in India in December 2021.

This crossover SUV could be an excellent move for Toyota in the current market. SUVs & MPVs are still trending and growing; also, they have halted the bookings for both Innova & Fortuner diesel variants. So this could capture some market too.

What does it offer?

Corolla Cross is a bit more extensive than the Creta but slightly smaller than the Harrier. Overall the design is futuristic, with the gloss black grille flanked by projector headlights. The appearance exhibits a signature Toyota look with design inspiration from the RAV4.

The Thailand spec version is available with two powertrains; hybrid and petrol. Both are offered in FWD drivetrain, and the hybrid is powered by a 1.8-litre petrol engine making 97hp & 142Nm torque with the electric motor churning out 72hp & 163Nm torque.

The IC engine churns out 138hp & 177Nm torque powered by the same 1.8-litre engine. Both powertrains are mated to a CVT transmission, but needless to say, the hybrid will be more fuel efficient. What do you think about this SUV?
