What’s in The Name?
With the A5 name, Audi has revealed the replacement for the A4. This new car is not an addition to Audi’s lineup, it is indeed a replacement for the A4 nameplate. The new Audi cars with internal combustion engines are named with odd numbers. The electric cars will be named with even numerics.
The All-New Platform
The Audi A4 was based on the MLB platform since 2007. MLB platform was first introduced with the then A5.
The new A5 is based on Audi’s new Premium Platform Combustion (PPC) platform. This platform has a few similarities to the Premium Platform Electric (PPE) introduced in the new Q6 e-tron. The A5 will have a longitudinal engine layout. This new platform is much more accommodating of various electrified powertrains.
Dimensions:
Thanks to the new platform, the A5 is 67 mm longer and 13 mm wider than the A4.
Length: 4.83 meters
Width: 1.86 meters
Wheelbase: 2.9 meters.
Design:
The old A5 was available as a Coupe, Cabriolet, or Sportback with four doors. The A4 was available as a sedan and an estate. The new model comes in both fastback sedan and estate body styles. There will be no coupe variant available.
The new car comes with Audi’s striking front fascia. It has a muscular, in-your-face grille design which is highlighted by blacked-out chrome. The tail section looks very dynamic with sharp body lines connected to the side profile. The tail lights are connected with a light strip.
The side profile looks mature with clean lines and side skirts with chrome inserts. The wheel arches give a very muscular look to the car. Audi designers call the flared wheel arches “Quattro muscle.”
New Introductions
Dynamic OLED lights:
The new OLED lights can display eight patterns apiece both front and rear and have a Dynamic mode that continually changes what’s displayed.
New interior
Audi is known for making excellent interiors. This new A5 is no different. It uses the same tech as the Q6 e-tron on the inside. The highlights of the interiors are:
- The big curved screen
- 11.9-inch digital driver display
- 14.5-inch tablet-like infotainment that controls the temperature and airflow
- Seat ventilation and heating
- 10.9in touchscreen can be added for the front passenger’s entertainment
Powertrain
During the launch, the A5 will have both ICE and 48V mild hybrid powertrains. The hybrids use Audi’s new MHEV Plus system, which has two motor generators for better fuel efficiency and regenerative braking. This system includes a centrally mounted powertrain generator in addition to the standard starter generator that is built into the starter.
