The first-generation BMW 3 Series, internally known as the E21, was introduced in 1975 as a successor to the BMW 02 Series. It featured a sleek and aerodynamic design with a distinctive kidney grille at the front. The E21 offered a range of engines, including four-cylinder petrol engines and a six-cylinder option. With its balanced handling and engaging driving dynamics, the E21 established the 3 Series as a driver’s car from the start. The sporty design is owed to the designer Paul Bracq, who made this charming car.
Second Generation (1982-1994)
The second-generation BMW 3 Series, known as the E30, was launched in 1982. It featured a more refined design with new technology. Third Generation (1990-2000)

The third-generation BMW 3 Series, designated as the E36, was introduced in 1990. It featured added agility and temperament. The E36 brought advancements and extended the front-end seat set at an angle to provide better comfort along with better protection against impacts. This compact design contributed to the massive success of the E36; for the first time, the two-door sedan was replaced by a standalone coupe that was wider and flatter than the predecessor.
Fourth Generation (1998-2007)
The fourth-generation BMW 3 Series, known as the E46 debuted in 1998. It represented a significant leap forward in terms of design with a curved roofline providing more headroom. The E46 showcased a unique design as a coupe convertible while maintaining BMW’s signature design cues. In addition to the extra sporty agility, it was safer with features such as ABS, cornering brake control (developed indigenously), and six airbags. The fifth-generation BMW 3 Series, featuring the E90 and E91 as touring sedans along with the coupe E92 and cabriolet E93 was introduced in 2005. This fifth generation further became the world car of the year at that time. It featured a more aggressive design language and incorporated innovative technologies such as iDrive infotainment system and active steering. The E90/E91 offered a range of engine options, including powerful six-cylinder variants and efficient diesel engines.
Sixth Generation (2011-2019)

Seventh Generation (2019-present):

The seventh-generation BMW 3 Series, designated as the G20 (sedan) and G21 (touring), was unveiled in 2018 at the Mondial Paris Motor Show. This generation featured more extensive dimensions along with an improved streamline and weight-saving elements made from high-quality aluminium. The G20/G21 featured enhanced technology that allows it to drive semi-autonomously, and it is also equipped with adaptive voice and gesture control. Again, for the first time, it also offered a plug-in hybrid as the BMW 330e variant, emphasizing BMW’s commitment to electrification with a range of 65 km with a fully charged battery. The G20/G21 M3 returned with more power and performance, setting new benchmarks in the sports sedan segment.
