BS6 Era: Boon to economy or Bane to Performance!?!

New BS6 engines have gone through many changes in order to make them compliant with new emission norms. For the past few weeks, two-wheeler manufacturers are unveiling new or updated BS6 vehicles. There is a lot of work gone into the work in developing new engines or modifying old engines to new standards.

There roams a question in people’s heads. Why BS4 to BS6 have changes in performance and economy figures? why BS3 to BS4 had none?

Changes and Efforts by Manufacturers

  • The new BS6 engines require many changes in order to make them BS6 compliant.
  • In terms of the updates, manufacturers had to shift to Fi (Fuel Injection) from carburettors. This can precisely control the delivery of fuel inside the engine.
  • Apart from that, some precious metals are added in the exhaust system to control emission from the exhaust.

Reasons for Power Loss

  • The basic rule for emission is that more the power more are the emissions. To contain those emissions more catalyst material is required.
  • All performance-oriented motorcycles like KTMs and Kawasakis increasing the prices by a few thousand are acceptable and don’t hurt much. Hence, the power figures remain more or less the same.
  • So these manufacturers faced a lot of problems in maintaining the right proportion between the price and performance.
  • Whereas the other motorcycle manufacturers chose to maintain price over performance.
  • The new exhaust system with additional filters increased the back pressure decreasing the performance.
  • Reducing the RPM for peak power was the only way to go.
  • This decreases the power but made the throttle response even better.
  • The new emission norms can only be achieved by controlled stoichiometric combustion increasing the about of fuel combustion than before.
  • Whereas most vehicles in India ran on lean mixtures decreasing their overall fuel consumption.
  • Running on a lean mixture produces more NOx (Nitrogen Oxides) which needed to be controlled.

Riding a new BS6 compliant vehicle will surely have its own charm as the new vehicles have very little NVH (Noise Vibration Harshness) levels than before.

The new BS6 engine is not only made to be less polluting but also increased refinement.
