The Hindustan Ambassador is not just a car. It’s a feeling beyond words. And the moment entire generations were waiting for seems to be around the corner. If reports are to be believed, the Hindustan Ambassador is all set to return in a modern new EV avatar. While the exact timeline as to when the new “Amby” will arrive is still quite uncertain, here are 5 features that it must retain in order to be the boss it always was.
What’s known about the new Amby?
As per media reports, Hindustan Motors has collaborated with French automaker Peugeot for the EV Amby’s design as well as the engine. Uttam Bose, MD and CEO of Hindustan Motors, was quoted saying that “We have just started the R&D (research and development) work. This hatchback version of the Ambassador will have all kinds of features and better interior, which a new-age customer looks for.”
Bose also added that the mechanical design, as well as works on the engine, has reached an advanced stage of development, while also stating that the total investment of the joint venture is around 600 Crores. Other details as per Bose will be announced next year.
Must-Have Features
While accurate and concrete details about the new electric Amby will crystalize as things develop, the Ambassador was and will continue to be a cult classic no matter how well the new Amby EV does. Everything about the Ambassador badging speaks volumes about the vehicle’s legacy over 5 decades. And if the new Amby wants to be the cult the classic Amby was, here are 5 things that are a must:
-
Huge Cabin Space
The Ambassador was the status symbol for over 56 years. It was not just the choice of the people, but also of the leaders, actors, and the elite. And rightly so, because the HM Ambassador was known for its huge, wide and spacious cabin that gave its riders a larger than life feeling. And if the new Amby wants to carry on the Amby’s charm, huge cabin space is a must!

Sofa Like Rear “Bench”
One thing that made the Ambassador a cult, was the fact the vehicle offered rear seats that were so comfortable that even sofas were a fail in front of them. In fact, the Ambassador was one of the best chauffeur-driven cars back then. The back seat comfort it offered was nothing short of a mother’s lap. If the new EV Amby manages to offer the same feel, success is guaranteed.

Commanding Road Presence
The HM Ambassador was a badass vehicle that was a status symbol back then. One of the biggest factors that contributed to the Ambassador’s massive success was the commanding road presence the vehicle offered. If the new Amby’s design is in development, we hope that the modern-day version of the classic cult brings back a road presence as badass as the OG one.
-
A Durable Build Quality
The first preference of even Army Generals back then, the Ambassador stood for a build quality that was never experienced before. The vehicle was built like a tank and could take on difficult situations well. While the new Amby is expected to arrive in an electric avatar, if it could offer a built quality as good as the OG, the vehicle would be the go-to EV in India.
-
A Made in India Approach
The entire nation knows that the classic Ambassador was entirely a made in India product. This was something that made the OG Amby the preferred choice for millions. Even though the HM-Peugeot has collaborated to create the Amby EV, if the vehicle could follow a made in India approach then the new EV’s chances to rise to fame will be much higher.
So these were 5 iconic characteristics the new Amby should retain. Stay pinned to the GoMechanic Blog for everything automotive.
