We have proved our self-worth to the world and now India stands as a strong nation in the world. In today’s Independence Day special, we have a look at the cars that were used by our freedom fighters. Considering it was 1947, owning, driving or using a car to commute was considered as a luxury within itself! Here are Indian Freedom fighters and their cars.

Ford Model T – Mahatama Gandhi
Starting off our list with the father of the nation and one of the most iconic cars ever made in the history of automotive! Mahatama Gandhi was seen using this car many times in history. One such important occasion which is still marked in history is when he was released from the Bareilly Central Jail in UP in 1927. This car has been owned by many vintage car collectors since then.

Mahatama Gandhi – Packard
The white Packard you see in the above picture was owned by the famous industrialist and freedom fighter, Ghanshyam Das Birla. He was friends with Gandhiji and therefore, his car was used by the father of the nation several times.

Netaji Subhash Chandra Bose – 1937 Wanderer W24
Pranab Mukherjee unveiled this car in 2017 in Kolkata. This Wanderer W24 used by Netaji has been restored to life by Audi India. Krishna Bose said that she along with her family members had taken rides in this car till 1957 after which it was not fit for running. Heard about the ‘Great Escape’? Well, if you haven’t you definitely need to check that event out. Netaji used this car to Gomoh Railway station which was a part of the same plan.

Pt. Jawaharlal Nehru – Rolls-Royce Silver Wraith
This was India’s first estate car. Pt. Jawaharlal Nehru was India’s first Prime Minister, therefore, was also the first Indian to use this car for his travel purposes. Queen Elizabeth had gifted this car to Lord Mountbatten and was later passed on to Nehru post-independence. This is one of the most important ones among Indian freedom fighters cars.

Fiat 1100 – Lal Bahadur Shastri
He was the second Prime Minister of India and bought the Fiat 1100 for Rs.12,000. For this, he had to take a loan of Rs. 5,000 from Punjab National Bank which was later on repaid by his wife. You can find this Fiat 1100 preserved at the Lal Bahadur Shastri Memorial museum in Delhi.

Cadillac convertible – Rajendra Prasad
While India’s first Prime Minister travelled in style, India’s first President had nothing less! Rajendra Prasad, the first President of India used a Cadillac convertible for his official travels. He was elected as a President in 1951 and was again re-elected as the President in 1957. Prasad became the only Indian president who has served two full terms.
Each Indian who struggled for freedom was a fighter! Talking about names, India gained independence because of a large number of freedom fighters and their huge sacrifices. As said in the beginning, it was 1947 and not everyone could afford a car.
