The wait is finally over. Mahindra has officially launched the three-door Thar in the name of Mahindra Thar Roxx. The addition of two more doors took a span of four years. Mahindra Thar is a lifestyle vehicle and an extremely capable off-roader. However, the majority of buyers used the Thar as a daily lifestyle vehicle rather than taking them to trails. This demanded for a more practical Thar. And here it is in all its glory.
What’s in The Name: Mahindra Thar Roxx
As Mahindra mentions the Thar Roxx is ‘Solid as a rock, the ‘Thar ROXX’ embodies the personality of a rockstar, with the ‘X’ factors of sophistication and performance.’ This SUV definitely is a rockstar—no wonder it features in numerous music singles.
It was expected that the 5-door Thar would carry the ‘Armada’ nametag. But that speculation did go wrong.

Difference Between Mahindra Thar Roxx and The Thar
ompared to the 3-door Thar, the Roxx gets a new grille design that’s divided into six, double-stacked slots, unlike the seven slots present in the Thar 3-door. The headlamps retain the circular design, but they now get an LED projector setup with C-shaped Daytime Running Lamps – higher variants are expected to get LED fog lamps. The front bumper has some unique design elements as well with integrated fog lamp housings and faux brushed aluminium bits at the centre. Top-spec variants are likely to have fog lamps with a cornering function.
The Roxx gets chunky wheel arches and stylish 19-inch diamond-cut alloy wheels for the higher variants, while mid variants will likely get 18-inch alloys. While the front door looks identical to the standard Thar, the rear door gets a unique, vertically positioned handle. The quarter glass aft of the rear door has a triangular shape, similar to the Thar EV concept. The Thar Roxx will have a dual-tone paint shade for most variants – with a contrast black roof – that will give it a removable hardtop look.
At the rear, it looks quite similar to the Thar 3-door, but a closer look confirms the mildly reprofiled tail lamps with C-shaped LEDs and a tailgate design that also accommodates the rear wiper and washer.
The Thar Roxx has a double-stacked 6-slot grille, while the Thar 3-doors has a 7-slot grille. Instead of the 3-door Thar’s LED lights, the headlamps are also brand new with new C-shaped DRLs. When you look at the Thar Roxx from the side, the diamond-cut metals are 19-inches which is much bigger than on the 3-door Thar. The other big difference is length. The Roxx is around 400mm longer than the Thar and has a longer wheelbase, which means there is more room for people in the back seats and for bags.
When it comes to the inside, the Roxx and the 3-door Thar will not have the same general design. Some of the differentiating features the Roxx will have are:
- Two 10.25-inch screens same as the ones seen in Mahindra XUV 3XO
- A sunroof
- ADAS
- 6 airbags as standard
- A powered driver’s seat
- An electronic fuel lid release
- Electrochromic IRVM
- Extendable front sun visors with vanity mirrors and lights for both the front seats
- Ventilated front seats
- A wireless charger
- A 65-watt type-c fast charging port
- Bigger and more usable front passenger glove box with cooling function
- A premium Harman Kardon music system
The Thar Roxx would have the same 2.0l turbo gas engine and a 2.2l diesel engine. Both the 2.0-liter petrol engine and the 2.2-liter petrol engine will come with 4×4 and either an automatic or a manual 6-speed gearbox. There will be no 1.5l diesel engine in the Thar Roxx as present in the 3-door Thar.

When it comes to the sheer road presence, no Jimnys can match that. Gurkha does come close the road presence as that of a that. Power is also leagues ahead of the current-gen Maruti Jimny and even Gurkha 5-door. The Thar Roxx can seat 5 people, the Force Gurkha 5-door can easily seat 6 passengers and has individual seats on the 2nd and 3rd row, while Maruti Jimney can only seat up to 4 passengers.
