India’s largest automaker has taken a bold decision this time. We knew that some of the diesel models were going off the charts but MSIL has also included the Swift in their decision.

Maruti Suzuki Swift diesel was powered by a 1.3-litre DDiS engine which has been discontinued by the automaker. It was not upgraded to the BS6 emission norms. This was because of the cost of upgrading this engine to comply with the BS6 norms, was likely to be very high. Maruti Suzuki, therefore, didn’t want to alienate its customers by letting them buy at a higher price.

Maruti Suzuki chairman, RC Bhargava said, “In Europe, where Euro VI standards are already in place, diesel vehicle sales are falling. The effect is expected to be more accentuated here as customers are more price-sensitive.”
The 1.3-litre diesel engine on the Maruti Suzuki Swift was coupled to a 5-speed manual gearbox. The output figures were 74bhp and 190 Nm of torque. An AMT version was also there with the diesel engine option. The only engine option left with the Swift now is a 1.2-litre petrol unit producing 89bhp and 113Nm of torque.

The Maruti Suzuki Swift diesel was available in 6 variants including VDi, VDi AMT, ZDi, ZDi AMT, ZDi Plus, and ZDi Plus AMT. The Dzire facelift also didn’t get the diesel upgrade while the Ciaz has got a diesel upgrade. The Fiat-sourced 1.3-litre engine on the Ciaz was recently upgraded to a 1.5-litre variant. Maruti has also introduced the Vitara Brezza in the petrol avatar. MSIL is pushing the use of petrol and CNG in the BS6 era!
