Well, it was back in 2019 when we at GoMechanic first reported that India’s largest automobile manufacturer MSIL (Maruti Suzuki India Limited) has started working on a Maruti Wagon R based EV just after tata had announced that they will be launching the electrified version of the Tata Nexon.
Not only that in later 2019 we also caught glimpse of the then rumoured Maruti Suzuki XL5 ( Wagon R EV) being tested on Indian roads. However, according to certain media reports Maruti might as well launch the combustion engine based variant as well if everything goes well the electric version which was recently spied testing in Gurugram.

However, The main thing which helps us identify the Maruti Suzuki XL5 as an electric vehicle is the absence of the tailpipe at the rear-end and the presence of the B-mode that could be seen under the gear lever.

Not much is known about the powertrain but According to leading media sources, the XL5 will take an average AC charger will take an average 7 hours to fully charge the Maruti Suzuki XL5 EV. Whereas the DC fast charger will do the magic in under an hour.
Going by the spy shots captured we can easily identify the all-new Maruti Suzuki XL5 will feature a new nose along with integrated headlights and grille, the new nose also features a split headlight setup, with much larger underbody circular headlamps.

Additionally, The spied test mule of the Maruti Suzuki XL5 also supported high-mounted running lamps and massive 175/65 R15 tyres and wheels, Although the alloys have been borrowed from the long lost cousin the Ignis. The all-new WagonR based XL5 shares almost every aspect of the legendary conventional hatchback.
Talking about the inside as seen in the spy shots we could easily make out that the Wagon R based EV will share its interior with its combustion engine based cousin. However, we can expect the new E-Hatch to boast some top of the line features such as automatic climate control and an impressive 7.0-inch touchscreen infotainment system compatible with Android Auto and Apple CarPlay.
The overall cabin design and layout is similar to the Wagon R. Expect features like the climate control aircon unit and the 7.0-inch touchscreen infotainment system to be retained.
We can also expect Maruti to launch a separate XL5 plus which will support the fast charging providing a much larger degree of flexibility and convenience to all XL5 users.
