Showstoppers Of The Indian Auto Expo 2023 | EVs Rule

The 16th edition of Auto Expo, which started off on 11^th January 2023, is currently the talk of the town. With several new cars showcased at each pavilion, it seems as if EVs are the true showstoppers. Here’s what’s driving the Expo 2023.

1. Maruti Suzuki eVX Concept
   

   

   Kicking off the EV game was Maruti Suzuki, which showcased its eVX concept. Built on an all-electric SUV platform, the eVX concept measures 4,300mm x 1,800mm x 1,600mm. With a 60 kWh battery onboard, the eVX features ‘safe battery technology’. The driving range of the eVX concept is claimed at 550 km, which can change the game if found true in real-world runs.

2. eMG6
   

   

   At the MG Pavilion, the carmaker showcased the eMG6 as its showstopper for Day 1. Underpinned by parent company SAIC’s platform, the eMG6 was showcased comes with a 1.5-litre turbocharged petrol engine mated to a permanent magnet synchronous motor. The PHEV thus produces 301 bhp of power with 480 Nm of peak torque, with a claimed 0 to 100 sprint in less than 6 seconds. With a ten-speed DU10-speed EDU intelligent electric drive transmission onboard, the eMG6 stole the show.

3. Ioniq 5
   

   

   Already open for bookings for a token amount of 1 lakh, Hyundai officially launched the Ioniq 5 at the Auto Expo 2023 as its showstopper for a price of Rs. 44.95 Lakhs. The Ioniq 5 is Hyundai’s maiden battery electric vehicle that will be based on the company’s global electric modular platform (E-GMP). The Electric SUV will get a permanent magnet synchronous motor mated with a 72.6kWh battery and will offer an output of 217PS/350Nm. The Ioniq 5 range is claimed to be 631 Km that is absolutely superb.

4. EV9 Concept
   

   

   Based on the E-GMP architecture, Kia also unveiled its EV9 electric SUV concept at the Expo 2023. The EV9 offers camera monitoring systems, a panoramic sunroof, 22-inch machined wheels, a digital tiger face and a lot more. Claimed to deliver a range of 483 km, the EV9 will bring in next-generation ultra-fast charging tech and a 350 kW charger that can charge the EV from 10-80% in 20 to 30 minutes.

5. BYD Seal
   

   

   Dubbed the brand’s answer to the popular Tesla Model 3 for markets like Europe and China, the Seal is a born-electric performance sedan that stole the show at the BYD Pavilion. Carrying the ocean-themed nomenclature in BYD’s EV range, the Seal sedan features an all-glass roof and much more. The sedan is longer and more spacious than the Model 3. Using the company’s Blade battery tech, the sedan will a testament to what the Chinese carmaker has in mind for India.

6. Harrier EV
   

   

   At the Tata Pavilion, all eyes were on the company’s first all-wheel drive electric SUV, the Harrier EV, in India, albeit as a concept. While no other details about the EVs are out yet, we can still expect the production-ready Harrier EV to offer a range of around 400 to 450 km, achieved by a battery pack with a capacity of around 60kWh. With a host of aerodynamic cosmetic changes such as new spoilers, bumpers, air intake etc. the performance will be superb.

7. Euniq 7
   

   

   Another showcase by MG, the Euniq 7 MPV, is yet another showstopper at the Auto Expo 2023. Marketed as the Maxus Mafi fuel cell van in overseas markets, the vehicle was the world’s first MPV to use hydrogen-based fuel cell propulsion when it was revealed in 2020. While no details about the MPV’s powertrain were shared by the company, the vehicle itself is a sight to watch.
