Ask someone about the available sports coupes in India. The answer would be the likes of Jaguar F-Type or Porsche Cayenne Coupe Turbo or someone may even say DC Avanti! But you will be astonished to know that there is one more car that many of you might not have even heard of. It is the Tamo Racemo. Heard of it? You might not be familiar with the company’s name also. Well, to clear this doubt first, it is none other than India’s very own Tata Motors. Yes, you heard that right! India’s largest automobile company, Tata Motors have their very own 2-seater sports coupe. Let’s find out more about this undiscovered beast!
The Design
Racemo looks as if it is straight out of a game. Well, actually it is. Tamo Racemo has been featured in the very popular car racing game, Microsoft’s Forza Horizon 3. It is the first-ever Indian car to be featured in this game. The company describes the sports coupe’s design as ‘Fairly Spartan’. It is based on the IMPACT DESIGN elements i.e. Humanity Line, Slingshot Line and Diamond DLO which gives the TAMO RACEMO a different identity and instant recognisability.
It has been built on a patented platform which goes by the name of MOFlex Multi-Material Sandwich (MMS) Structure, a structure that has been used for the first time in the automotive industry for passenger vehicles.
At the interior, it gets a race cockpit with bucket seats with flatbed steering. And the steering is no normal one, it has got all the racing style controls on it. And behind the steering, one can see the paddle shifters. But what’s most interesting is the 3 panel-screen which displays every possible information during a race and is also an infotainment system which even allows you to take a selfie picture!
Tamo Racemo: Engine specs
The 2-seat sports coupe is a beast inCARnate. A 1.2-litre turbocharged, inter-cooled petrol engine powers the sports car. It is capable of churning out 187.04hp of power @6,500rpm and 210Nm of torque @2,500rpm. Notice how early the peak torque kicks in. A 6-speed TA6300 AMT transmission with paddle shifters performs the transmission duties.
Other Specifications
The 2-seat sports coupe has got 17″ alloy wheels at the front and 18″ at the rear. Bot the ends have disc brakes to assist the car which has got a powerful engine. It also gets electric power brakes. With independent double-wishbone, anti-roll bar at both the ends with an antiroll bar at the front and stabiliser link at the rear, RACEMO makes sure that the thrill is comfortable too.
ABS with EBD and two airbags is what makes this sports coupe safe to drive. Why are the 2 airbags enough, you ask? Because it is a 2 seat coupe which can accommodate at max 2 people who are to be protected. And according to Tata Motors, the car comply with the safety norms of BNVSAP.
It took almost a decade of a journey for Tata to make this a reality. Here is a glimpse of the key milestones of the journey that TAMO embarked on.
What went wrong with the TaMo Racemo?
This Tamo Racemo project was halted by Tata Motors due to the cost-cutting across the board. This project was a great chance for Tata to enter the sports segment but yet the automotive industry is not ready yet!
