India’s topmost consumer commission the National Consumer Disputes Redressal Commission (NCDRC) has asked one of India’s largest car manufacturers Tata Motors to pay Rs 3.5 lakh a compensation amount for misleading advertisements and making false milage claims regarding the Tata Indigo.
This decision was taken as a response to a PIL filed by a customer under which Kolkata-resident Pradipta Kundu customer stated that he/s was alluded to buy the Tata Indigo due to these false claims made by the company in their advertisement, but upon taking test drives on different dates and under different situation the milage of the car didn’t perform as it was previously claimed by the company.

Kundu purchased the Tata Indigo in 2011 after seeing an advt. in which the company had claimed that the milage on the Indigo will be 25 kmpl, but was highly disappointed after finding out that the car did not provide the promised milage.
The mentioned misleading advt. by Tata Motors also claimed that the car was India’s Most fuel-efficient car and that it was on an offer for a short time only.

In response, to the complaint, Tata Motors also filed a review petition which was rejected by the NCDRC. The commission also upheld the state commission order which had initially directed the company to pay Rs 3.5 lakh in total for taking recourse to deceptive sales practices with a misleading advertisement
As of now, Tata Motors have to pay the customer a compensation of Rs 2 lakhs to the designated customer with an additional Rs 1.5 lakhs towards punitive damages with the state consumer welfare fund.
