It will be a no-shocker if the Indian car manufacturer, Tata, launches the Sierra in the Indian market. Tata has been very active in recent decades, having had a number of good launches and concept showcases.
Tata Sierra has developed a cult of its own in our country. The talks about the SUV and what it meant to the Indian car market have increased among enthusiasts. Tata has also taken full advantage of the spark by showcasing the new concept Sierra SUV at almost every event.
Tata Sierra History
Tata Sierra was launched in the year 1991 and was based on the Tata Telcoline pickup truck. Tata Sierra is the first off-road SUV made by an Indian car company. It was a rear-wheel drive SUV with proper 4X4 credentials. The Sierra also incorporated some creature comforts and innovations that were not seen in any other Indian cars. Tata Sierra Concept
The concept of Tata Sierra was first showcased at the Auto EXPO 2020. The car has a fixed panoramic view back window pane, just like the Tata Sierra (generations 1 and 2). It also has an extra sliding door that leads to the rear seating area that looks like a lounge. The car will be built on an ALFA frame that can be changed. Pitap Bose, the in-house designer, says, “This isn’t a formal program yet, but it’s also not just a show car.” In 2022 or 2023, a more useful form with different seating arrangements might come out.
Tata Sierra Recent Developments
In recent years, Tata Motors has been on a roll. They have been consistent with product launches and updates. Tata Sierra has always been a star attraction. Sierra was showcased as an all-electric SUV but the latest updates and revelations have directed us towards an idea of internal combustion engines as well.
The sources say that the Sierra could have a petrol and a diesel powertrain along with the electric one. The platform on which the Sierra will be built will be an all-new one that will be capable of supporting an All-wheel drive system as well.
The new SUV will be a departure from the rugged ladder-on frame built of the original Sierra. The three-door body style will be replaced by a more conventional 5-door layout. The fixed Alpine window will get tweaked as well. The tall window line can get a split treatment like in the Defender.
The 2.0-L engine from the FCA will be likely available in the ICE versions.
Our Thoughts On Tata Sierra
The launch of the Sierra will be a door wide open for innovative automotive design. However, this has been started already by the unveiling of the Tata Curvv range of SUVs, which are the coupe SUVs from an Indian manufacturer. It will be interesting to see when will Tata officially announce the Sierra.
