At the beginning of this year Toyota Innova Crysta was launched with BS6 compliant engines. It was, however, missing its 2.8L diesel engine which had been an option for years now. Toyota has now confirmed that the Innova Crysta won’t get its 2.8L diesel engine back.
In a chat with a leading publisher, Naveen Soni, Senior Vice president in sales and service of Toyota said that the demand for the 2.8 was lower than that of the 2.4L so they decided it was wise to launch the BS6 Innova Crysta with the same. He also said that the Fortuner will get the 2.8L diesel engine.

The 2.4L diesel engine outputs 150bhp and 400Nm torque and is paired with a 5-speed manual gearbox alongside a new 6-Speed automatic option as it was earlier available only to the 2.8L engine. Alongside the transmission update, it has also received extra accessories like the SCR(Selective Catalytic Reduction) and DPF(Diesel Particulate Filter) that makes it BS6 compliant.

Discontinuing the 2.8L diesel engine has also allowed Toyota to increase the price of the car as 2.4L which was earlier a lower variant now becomes the higher variant. This helps both the company and the consumer. As the company gets a better profit and the consumers get a car which is similar to the higher variant but cheaper.
The BS6 Innova Crysta got a major price hike. The BS6 petrol variant got a price hike of 11,000 INR to an upwards of 43,000 INR. The diesel variant got even a bigger hike starting from 39,000 INR to 1.12 Lakhs INR. This is expected to increase even more in the future.
