Toyota Yaris has always been a private use car than a commercial one. This, however, is about to change as Toyota is all set to introduce a new variant of Yaris which will be made exclusively for commercial use.

In a chat with a leading publisher, Naveen Soni, senior vice president, sales and customer of Toyota Kirloskar Motor said that they are trying to broaden the horizon for Yaris. This includes two things, first to make a low-spec model fit the market of commercial use as the current variants offered by the car are costly and not a suitable choice as a fleet. The second is to keep the diesel engine with the transition to BS6 as most of the companies are deciding against it. This opens up a market for Yaris to tap into.
The current entry-level Yaris the J trim gets a myriad of feature for a price of 8.76 Lakhs. These features include, projector headlamps, refrigerator glove box, remote locking, power windows and three airbags. The company is looking down on trimming some of the features to create a “taxi-suitable, low-spec model”.

The car is powered by a 107hp 15.L petrol engine which will either be used for the commercial option with manual transmission to cut costs or with an entirely new CNG option to make the Yaris more lucrative for fleet owners.
After a mild update last year, Yaris received a positive response with its sales increasing by 83% in the first two months of this year.
Toyota really wants to push Yaris out in the front and they keep taking new and aggressive steps to ensure it stays ahead. With the new idea of making Yaris a commercial fleet car, only time will tell if it works out or not.
