What happens when you cross-breed a car and a jeep? You get a Trishul. No, not the Lord Shiva’s weapon! I am talking about a tourer that was made in India back in the 1980s. Not much has been heard about the Trishul and not much is known. Let’s try to link the few bits and pieces that we know. Let’s get started.
The 1980s – Time of youth uprising
People demanded more than just covered cars and especially the youth. Everyone wanted a jeep at that time as it was way cooler than the normal cars at that time. Mahindra’s jeeps were a good option. But Indians needed a cheaper option too. This is when Trishul Crafts Automobiles Limited from Patna decided to make one. This was a ZERO-door compact jeep built in around that time. It was powered by a 500cc single-cylinder diesel engine from Lombardini.
Trishul – What was different?
At the front was a simple-looking bonnet with a Trishul ornament at the top to signify the strength. The looks were pretty basic. Round headlamps, simple grille, bench-style seats at both front and the rear to accommodate 4-5 people easily or maybe more, and a pillar cum grab rail at the centre on both sides. The front glass panel frame could be laid as is common in the jeeps. A canvas top was used to cover the car.
The most astonishing part of this unusual vehicle is that it had a staggering mileage fo over 28kmpl or maybe more.
You might have seen one in old Bollywood movies when the police sirens used to ring. Ringing some bells? Well, this car is a very rare sight on the roads and you might even see one, though in a poor condition as the car is pretty old.
