  • Volkswagen’s mobile charging robot will be activated using a mobile app or a V2X communication system. The mobile charging robot will drive itself to the vehicle which is required to be charged and will interact with the vehicle.

  • It will carry a trailer that, from Volkswagen Autonews video, looks like a portable charging pod. The mobile charging robot will reach the vehicle, open the charging socket flap, and connect the portable charger to it.  All this with no human required around. Now that’s impressive.
  • After the vehicle is charged to the prescribed capacity, Volkswagen’s autonomous robot will bring the trailer back to the charging area and connect it to the charging station for further usage. It is then replenished with power.
  • It is a really spectacular system by Volkswagen as the charging trailer will remain with the vehicle while the mobile charging robot will cater the other charging requests autonomously. The robot seems to be equipped with various sensors in order to make the parking area safe as the robot can be seen to sense the incoming vehicle and takes the necessary action required in order to make the parking area safe.

It can be said that this system will surely make the electric vehicle charging infrastructure more usable. Volkswagen seems to have done a commendable job here. The official date of release has not been notified by Volkswagen but it can be expected to come out commercially soon.
