It is next to impossible to mention the GDi powertrain from the Korean carmaker that made its debut in the Venue. Hyundai Venue is in the Indian market for a while now, and the selling numbers show how successful the car has become. One of the formulae for success is the 1.0-litre GDi engine. But what is so special about this GDi motor? For starters, though 1.0-litre it makes identical power to the Nexon at 120ps and slightly more torque of about 172Nm. Talking about the transmission the SUV is mated to a 6 Speed manual transmission or recently launched iMT or an exciting 7-Speed DCT.

A while back Mahindra launched the XUV300 which indeed feature-loaded and powerful. For you to know, the XUV300 is based on the Ssangyong Tivoli and shares a lot with it. But this means it also shares the positives of the Ssangyong, which is the built quality. But the talking point here has to be the 1.2-litre turbo petrol engine. This engine generates 110ps of peak power and produces class-leading 200Nm of peak twist. Sadly, the XUV gets an only option of a 6-speed manual transmission.

No one would believe unless they see for themselves that Nissan kicks is one of the most powerful turbo petrol SUV in under 30 lakhs. Jeep Compass is just marginally more up in power but is again low on torque when compared to the Nissan. But how much power does the Nissan produce? First things first, Nissan Kicks comes with a 1.3litre 4-cylinder turbo petrol engine. This exciting motor produces 156ps of power and 254 Nm of peak torque. And this engine is mated to either a 6-speed manual transmission or a 6 step CVT.

    Torque 254 Nm@1600rpm
    Transmission 6-speed Manual/6-Step CVT

Talking about the features it gets 2 airbags in the base XV variant, and the automatic climate control is standard across the range.

  5. MG Hector

One cannot miss the offering from the Chinese brand MG which offers a large SUV at a fairly low price. Above all the hector comes with a turbo petrol engine. Talking more about the powertrain, the engine is a 1.5-litre turbo petrol engine that puts out 143bhp and 250 Nm of peak torque. The engine is mated to a 6-speed manual transmission or a DCT.

On the contrary, this is the only SUV in the list that also comes with a petrol hybrid. The powertrain remains the same in both. But here is the catch, the hybrid variant starts from the style variant.

  6. Kia Seltos

This was the car every one might have been waiting for. The Korean carmaker Kia made its debut in the Indian market with Seltos and oh boy it made them an instant hit. This amazing of an SUV, Seltos, comes with quality interiors and a long list of features. Alongside that, this vehicle also gets a 1.4-litre GDi turbo engine. Talking about the power out up, this motor produces 140ps of power and 242 Nm of peak torque. Kia Seltos gets two transmission options, a 6-speed manual transmission, and a 7-speed DCT.

Surprisingly Jeep also has its SUV offering a turbo petrol engine. Though the price comes out to be on the higher side, it still packs quite a punch when it comes to the engine. Let’s talk numbers first, the engine makes 160hp and about 250 Nm of peak torque. The engine is mated to either a 6-speed manual transmission or an automatic. Those are some high-end numbers, but the motor, it is a 1.4-litre 4-cylinder turbo petrol engine.

Engine 1.4-litre 4-cylinder turbo petrol engine
    Power 160hp@5,500rpm
    Torque 250Nm@2,500rpm
    Transmission 6-speed Manual/ Automatic
    Price ₹ 16.52 Lakh (ex-Showroom)

It is the base Sport plus variant that costs  ₹ 16.52 Lakh (ex-Showroom). Being a base variant the SUV from Jeep lacks a lot of features when compared to its rivals. Nevertheless, some times it’s the JEEP you own and that is all that matters.

  8. Hyundai Creta

    Hyundai Creta

Sharing the same platform as its sibling Kia Seltos, Creta fairs fairly similarity when it comes to the engine. But it is the transmission where the Creta might not appeal to the buyers, as it only comes in the top-end SX and the SX(o) trim. But that is not the topic of concern, that has to be the Gearbox. With the same 1.4-litre GDi turbo motor Creta is mated to a 7-speed DCT, yes! sadly there is no option of a manual transmission. But talking about the performance, this engine makes an identical 143ps of power and 242Nm of peak twist.

    Engine 1.4 T-GDi Petrol
    Power 140ps@6,000 rpm
    Torque 242 Nm@1500rpm-3200 rpm
    Transmission 7 Speed-DCT
    Price ₹ 16.17 Lakh (ex-Showroom)

    Volkswagen T-Roc
    Volkswagen T-Roc

This is where the Germans enter into the list with their T-Roc. First things First, T-Roc though an amazing SUV comes in India as a CBU unit. But does it affect the buyers in any way? well, yes! it’ll be way more expensive than its rivals. But with that said, CBU also tends to have European quality interiors. Now, let’s see what the Volkswagen T-Roc has under the hood. It is a 1.5-litre TSI motor that is capable of producing 148bhp and about 250 Nm of peak torque. The TSI motor gets a perfect 7-speed DSG combo to extract most out of the engine.

    Engine 1.5 TSI Petrol
    Power 148hp@5,000 rpm
    Torque 250 Nm@1500rpm
    Transmission 7 Speed-DSG
    Price ₹ 19.99 Lakh (ex-Showroom)

Volkswagen is only offered in one variant. That translated into top-notch interiors with a bucket load of features on the inside. 6 airbags, panoramic sunroof, all-digital instrument cluster are to name a few.

  10. Skoda Karoq

    Skoda Karoq TSI
    Skoda Karoq TSI

The Skoda Karoq also comes to the Indian shores as a CBU. Why not, the Karoq is based on Volkswagen’s T-roc. There is no surprise in the engine department too as it gets the same 1.5litre TSI motor churning out identical power and torque figures. Even the transmission remains the same.

    Engine 1.5 TSI Petrol
    Power 148hp@5,000 rpm
    Torque 250 Nm@1500 rpm
    Transmission 7 Speed-DSG
    Price ₹ 24.99 Lakh (ex-Showroom)

The most considerable difference between the VW and Skoda is the asking price, with the Skoda being way more expensive than the already expensive T-Roc. On the inside too, they offer identical equipment.

Due to the new BS6 emission norms, many carmakers are shifting from turbo diesel to turbo petrol, but still, some offer diesel too. With turbo petrol engines gaining popularity, we are sure that this would have less impact on our pockets, as well as somewhat on the environment.
