The premium electric hatchback Tata Altroz EV is appearing before the Indian audience for the first time at the Auto Expo 2020. Both the IC engine and electric versions were recently unveiled at the 2019 Geneva motor show. But the one on display at Auto Expo 2020 is closer to the production-spec car.
Design
From outside, it looks like the regular Altroz except for a few changes. The front grill has no vents as an electric does not require one. Dual LED headlamps and repositioning of the badge and new alloys are other noticeable changes in the electric variant.
Inside the Altroz EV, except for lighter upholstery and blue-tinted lights, everything else is pretty much the same. The general consensus seems to make it an all-blue venture with the AC vents getting blue inserts around it. The electric one does not have the regular mechanical gear knob. Instead, it gets a rotary one to select drive modes.
Other features are a semi-digital instrument cluster, 7-inch infotainment system and connected car tech.
Electric Motor Specifications
The Altroz EV will use Tata’s Ziptron Powertrain used in its electric compact SUV Nexon. In the Nexon, the motor gives a power output of 127 hp and a peak torque of 245 Nm. It has two drive modes – Drive and Sport and is mated to a single-speed transmission. The 30.2 kWh battery gives the car a range of 312 km according to ARAI tests. DC fast charging can charge the car from 0-80% in an hour.
Tata has not announced a launch date yet. We expect Tata to launch the car in the latter part of 2020. The Altroz, once launched, will become the only premium electric hatchback in the country with a price tag around 12 lakhs.
