- According to the previous rule implemented in 2018, earlier the average weight for a helmet was limited to 1.2 kg from 1.5 kg in a bid to make riding gears lighter and more comfortable for both riders and pillions. Moreover, the rule also restricted the sale of imported helmets that did support the ISI mark and weighed more than the average weight cap in the country.
- The new upgrade will do away with the 1.2 kg restriction and will also the sale of imported helmets. However, they would still require to comply with the Indian Standard Safety (ISS) norms.
What was the need for modification of norms?
- BIS announced an increase in the minimum weight of the helmet. The previous 700gms weight cap has been increased to 1.2kg. This was done in order to prevent sale and purchase of cheap and low-quality helmets. Such helmets provide less or no safety at all and are a major threat to the rider and pillion safety.
- This issue came into limelight when a body of representatives invited by the government from different helmet and safety gear manufacturers highlighted how the sale and purchase of better quality riding gears and helmets should not be blocked.
- MoRTH is planning on issuing a final notification to make the ISI certification for helmets sold in the country mandatory.
