We Indians have come a long way about what we used to think of automobiles. Earlier they were just a means of transport; with crude rugged cars like the Fiat Padmini and 118E ruling the market. All we wanted was an engine, four wheels and a gear lever; AC being the ultimate luxury. But since then we have come a long way, and most of the cars we see on roads have really cool high tech features that make the whole driving experience better.
This shift can be seen most evidently in the case of transmission. Indians used to somewhat be afraid of an automatic gearbox with myths like high maintenance, very low mileage and whatnot. But in the last 10 years, we finally have started understanding the worth of CVT(most mainstream auto transmission); and more and more companies have adopted it even in their most affordable cars. Readers, since we are on the subject of automatic transmission, let’s look at the 5 most affordable CVT cars in the Indian market.
-
Nissan Magnite
This name has been mentioned in numerous article and for all the right reasons. The last thread for relevancy of Nissan in India; the Magnite is a solid product that ticks all the boxes and is value for money. It comes with a 1.0 NA or a 1.0 turbocharged petrol engine. The turbocharged variant comes with both a manual and a CVT transmission. The base CVT variant is priced at just 7.89 lakhs, which makes it one of the most affordable SUVs(no offence but it is categorised as an SUV) in India.
-
Honda Amaze
The sub 4m sedan is known for its premium feel, excellent reliability and smooth drive. It often locks horns with the Maruti Suzuki Dzire when it comes to which is better. The baby Honda comes with two powertrain options; 1.2-litre petrol producing 90 bhp and a 1.5-litre diesel producing 100 bhp. Both of them can be bought with a CVT transmission(1st car in its segment to have CVT paired with a diesel engine).
Fun fact: It also gets paddle shifters! -
Maruti Suzuki Baleno
Baleno has been on the market for 5 years and it is still selling like hotcakes. The premium hatchback is the perfect recipe for Indians. Its spacious has a good engine and gets a touch screen! But it also is pretty convenient thanks to the CVT transmission. It is a great city car and the CVT makes it greater and affordable with prices starting at 7.79 lakhs.
-
Datsun Go+
A car no one talks about. The Japanese brand Datsun thought that if they bring a cheap car to the market, it’ll rock and boy oh boy were they wrong. Indians absolutely said no to the flimsy-looking car but hey, it does come with a CVT paired to a 1.0-litre petrol engine; which honestly is a shame. At 6.69 lakhs, it does undercut the above-mentioned cars, but at what cost?
-
Datsun Go
Last and certainly the least. Datsun Go was the first offering by them and they kept it sour and simple. A puny little engine, a fragile body and oh yeah, Cheap! They did try to sew things up by offering a CVT with the same engine as the Go+, but couldn’t help the car. But kudos to Datsun, with a price tag of 6.25 lakhs; it is the most affordable car with CVT transmission.
It’s arguable whether they are good cars or not, but they certainly are revolutionary and they provided the ever so premium CVT to Indians at an affordable price.
