New BS6 Vehicles Require PUC From 1st April?

Half a month before the introduction of BS6, was it worth the hype? The new emission norms are dominating the news charts now after the pandemic coronavirus. The work gone into the development of the new engines for BS6 by automobile manufacturers in India is enormous.

In these difficult times, there are a lot of questions floating in the customer’s head. One such question is Do BS6 vehicles require a pollution certificate?

BS6 norms over BS4 norms

  • The first major change in the exhaust emission norms was done in 2017 when BS4 was implemented in April. The next change to BS6 was unstoppable due to the rising pollution in the country especially the metro cities.
  • The Shift from BS4 to new norms is like going straight from earth to moon.
  • The work wasn’t easy as we skipped a ladder of BS5 in between.
  • Though there was really less time for the automotive manufacturers in India they gave everything they had and launched BS6 engines before the implementation date. This is a statement to appreciate must surely be appreciated.

Major Changes in BS6

Amongst all the changes the major changes in new engines are:

Diesel Engines

  • The new BS6 Diesel engines now get all new SCR (Selective Catalytic Reduction) to control the NOx (Nitrogen Oxide) emissions.
  • Installing additional DPF (Diesel Particulate Filter) in the exhaust systems to reduce the Sool or Particulate matter.
  • Controlling SOx (Sulphur Oxides) by removing the sulphur content from the diesel fuel

Petrol Engines

  • The vehicles running on petrol now get more advanced OBD (On-Board Diagnostics).
  • Getting realtime emission updates is an addon feature.

Now we know the transition, lets come back to the question.

Answer

Form the day vehicles are running on the Indian roads, they require a pollution certificate. There are no changes in the laws and you still require the certificate in order to know the pollution generated by the vehicle.

  1. Requiement of Pollution check certificate for BS 6 vehicle, be made after a period of 2 years or 20000 kms. Because new BS6 standard vehicles does not emit pollution as in the caSe of older vehicles but emitting much less pollution.

    • Hi Purushottam,
First of all, the BS6 cars do produce some emissions, although they lie in a permitted range. And PUC is needed as the pollution or the emissions from a car depend on the condition of the exhaust system too. So, PUC is basically a certificate to ensure that your car meets the guidelines.

  2. Govt. has to rethink about BS 6 Vehicles not to ask for PUC Certificate for upto 20000 kms running.. it’s a sheer collection of money.. and wastage of time.. most of the machines are not verifying correctly, finished the checking procedure within 5 minutes.. charges differently for PETROL and DIESEL Cars..

  3. Today I purchased new bike Hero Super Splendor having BS6 engine but not mentioned validity in pollution free certificate

  4. Sir i have activa 6G now we need PUC certificate renwal but i check all PUC center near me but no body done 6G puc please help advice delhi PUC center list

  5. Today I visited 2 pollution centers to get PUCC for my BS6 Scooty. But both of them told me that currently they are not doing PUC check for BS6 Scooty. Are there any specific PUC checking centers for these vehicles? or Government hasn’t issued any guidelines for PUCC of BS6

  6. Purchased new car bs6 on 17.6.022. Is it required PC ? If yes, from which date and applicable for how long ?

  7. I have bs6 byke.I go to pollution center to do the pollution but the PUC center boy say we are unable to do pollution of bs6 byke and I ask for another PUC center but that person say he don,t know. I went to another PUC center that also denied to do the pollution. What I do for it. This is happened to me in Delhi.

  8. 1( have paid a minimum of Rs.30000 to purchase a bs 6 c paid for the car in 2019 even when BS 4 car was available. taking into account the amount of Rs,300/- to take a pollution certificate per annum and the validity of the registration of a car is 10 years i need’nt have paid the extra amount in a lump sum just because the car is BS6..
    2) have had the owners of vehicles compulsorily go in for FAST TAG and now want to convert that into number plate reader.. wonder when the transport dept will think ahead and avoid these unnecessary expenses of the common man..
    3) service charges when i recharge on fast tag… there are amounts which are in fast tag accounts which remains unutilised for a long period of time ..the amount of interest the concerned dept., saves can offset the service charges..is fast tag really a service..

  9. It is totally ignorance of Govt. Why did they tell public you sell your older car for throw away price n buy BS6 “ non pollution technology” engine cars? 2ndly only the workshops should be certified to issue such certificates after making any tunings required, not at road side business..

  10. Hi.. i tried getting puc for my bs 6 petrol vehicle bt both centers couldn’t pass my vehicle. Y car service center says need to get it done from special puc center which has calibrated machines.
Where do I find such a center ?
