Eicher Polaris Multix: India’s First Personal Utility Vehicle

It seemed to become a Personal Utility Vehicle which means a people carrier, a cargo carrier and a power generator. Eicher Polaris Multix, India’s first PUV or the Personal Utility Vehicle came into existence back in 2015. Eicher Motors and Polaris India’s joint venture led to the manufacturing of this PUV. What are the specifications? Was Anything special in this PUV? Why did the road end for Multix? Let’s find out each and every known detail about the lesser-known vehicle of India.

Eicher Polaris Multix | Engine, Transmission and Other Specs

A Greaves Cotton 4-stroke single-cylinder engine with a capacity of 652cc is the power source in the Multix. The first generation of the Multix was BS3 compliant and the engine used to churn out 9.78hp of power while generating 27.1Nm of torque. With the BS4 upgrade in 2017, the power figure rose to 12.98hp and the peak torque increased to 37Nm. A 4-speed manual transmission was present. The Multix had an ARAI-rated fuel efficiency of 27.45kmpl.

Talking about the dimensions, take a look at the table.

Eicher Polaris Multix | Dimensions

Wheelbase 2,005mm
Length 3,235mm
Width 1,585mm
Height 1,856mm
Kerb Weight 650kgs
Ground Clearance 225mm
Cargo Capacity 1,918litres (extended)

For your reference, the Maruti Suzuki Alto 800 is 3,395mm in length. So the Multix was easy to drive through the city traffic while having a decent cargo capacity. The low kerb weight meant easy gliding and lower force requirement. Again, for the reference, the Alto 800 has a kerb weight of 850kgs.

The Exterior and the Interior

The Multix was a 4-door PUV. At the front, Polaris did a great job while designing the Multix. It was simply stylish. A black plain grille with a unique design housed the circular halogen lamps and two small circular indicators. The 13-inch wheels were well suited on the size of the Multix.

The Interior

For the interior, it had a very bland interior with basic steering, a basic instrument cluster, a cup holder at the driver’s side and a glove box at the passenger side. It had floating headrests, a unique feature, I personally have not seen it in any other vehicle present in India.

And that’s it! This is all that the PUV had inside. But there is one special feature that made it a good choice.

X-Port, the company said!

X-Port PTO
Eicher Multix X-Port PTO

If anyone knows about tractors knows about PTO. Tractors have a Power Take-off (PTO) point which can generate power using the engine’s power which can be connected to a generator. The PTO or the X-Port of Eicher Polaris Multix was capable of generating power of up to 3KW. The idea behind giving a PTO in this PUV was to make sure that the consumer’s operating costs are lowered as he won’t have to hire or buy a tractor for this purpose.

Eicher Polaris Multix | Variants and Price

Eicher-Polaris offered Multix in two variants, AX+ and MX. AX+ was priced ₹3.19lakh and for MX variant, you would have to spend ₹3.49lakh. The prices are ex-showroom, pan India.

What went wrong with the Multix?

Eicher Polaris Multix was discontinued in 2018. But it had some unique features, then why the failure. First of all, was the timing. It had to compete with the Maruti Suzuki Alto for the personal vehicle segment and Tata Ace for the commercial ones. It simply lacked at both the segments. People preferred Alto for personal use as it had more features and style. Tata Ace was more powerful. This brings us to the second point, the engine. It was underpowered as well as noisy.

The company was able to sell around 3,500 units in total since the launch while the plan was to sell over 10 times this number. Incurring loss, the companies decided to part ways and continue what they were doing before. What do you think of this unique Personal Utility Vehicle? Let us know in the comments section below.

    • Hi Poonam,

We agree with your views. Eicher Polaris Multix would have surely made an impact in the market, given some time in the market. As of now, it is true that owners are suffering in terms of after-sales service, now that Eicher and Polaris have parted ways. Thanks for reading, stay pinned!
