Going back to the era when the ‘kidney grille’ was relatively small. We have seen the grille grow in size as the time has passed. Here is a 1978 BMW 320i owned by the inspirational man himself! This is the first-ever generation of the BMW 320i and was unveiled at the Olympic Stadium in Munich in 1975. Sources suggest that Musk bought a second-hand 320i in 1994 for $1,400! Let’s have a look at other cars in the Elon Musk car collection!

Another one from the past era! Musk owns a 1920 Ford Model T. This was the first mass-production car for the normal public and is still considered the most influential car of the 20th century! Reports suggest that Musk received the Model T as a gift from his friend. Just to let you know, this car used to cost only $850 when it was launched. We guess it was a huge price then!

  3. E-Type Jaguar Roadster

All of us have a car that is our first love! Well, in Elon’s case, the E-type Jaguar Roadster stole his heart in the first go! He always wanted to own a convertible car and out of all the convertibles, this one was his favourite! Musk once said ‘Well, if I can ever afford it, that is the car I am going to get.’ And so that’s why I bought it.” looking at a picture of the Jaguar Roadster! In 1995, when he launched Zip2, one of his venture capitalists, gave him $40,000 and he spent most of the amount in buying this car. The E-Type Jaguar Roadster still forms a part of the Elon Musk car collection! First love never dies. Does it?

  4. Lotus Esprit

Okay! This list is getting interesting as we move on! A car or a submarine? You decide! For all those who are still confused, this is a modified Lotus Esprit which was used as an underwater prop in the movie ‘The Spy Who Loved Me’. It doesn’t end here. This wasn’t an amphibious car but just a prop. Guess what, Elon Musk got this from an auction where he paid $1Million for it! In an interview with the GQ magazine UK, Musk said “It was amazing as a little kid in South Africa to watch James Bond drive his Lotus Esprit off a pier, press a button and have it transform into a submarine underwater, I was disappointed to learn that it can’t actually transform. What I’m going to do is upgrade it with a Tesla electric powertrain and try to make it transform for real.” Let’s see if he succeeds in doing so!

  5. 1997 McLaren F1

According to Musk, this is the best car that has ever existed on the planet! So this is from the era when Musk’s first company was bought. He had a choice between buying a house in Pao Alto and the McLaren F1. Musk bought the sportscar without any second thoughts! This shows his immense love for cars. The 1997 McLaren F1 was a part of the Elon Musk Car collection till 2007. This car has a long tale to tell! In a nutshell, Musk used it for his daily travel and also, didn’t buy insurance for the vehicle as he thought he won’t crash it ever. When Peter Thiel asked Musk what this car could do, Musk replied: “Watch this.” he crashed the car and both of them were safe while the car was damaged badly.

For those who don’t know, Hamman is a well-known BMW tuning specialist. Talking about this 2005 BMW M5, Hamman de-limited the 5-litre V10 engine. The stock car had an electronically limited speed to 249kph. When the limiter was disabled, this sedan roared at 320kph! That’s a phenomenal figure for any car lover! This is a perfect example of how a family car could be tuned into such a beast. We must say, good choice Musk!

  7. Audi Q7

This was the best luxury off-roading tech that one could own in the past. Elon Musk had a huge family so definitely needed a car that could carry all of his family members. The Q7 became his choice. Musk felt that third-row access was a little problematic. According to him, a dwarf mountain climber could only get into it easily. He didn’t mean to demean anyone but he was actually right! Learning from his experience, he went for Falcon Wing doors in the Tesla Model X and you can now access the third row very easily even in tight parking spaces!

  8. Porsche 911 Turbo (2012)

This is another interesting car in the Elon Musk car collection. Not because it is a 911, it’s because this is where Tesla came into being. Elon Musk met JB Straubel in 2003 to discuss the idea of future tech in cars. Straubel was developing an electric car with Alan Cocconi who has successfully made an e-prototype.

Musk asked him to fit a Li-ion battery in his Porsche 911. Cocconi didn’t agree even for $250k! He got Musk in touch with some other guys who had an electric vehicle startup called Tesla. Musk got involved in their business for $30M and the rest is history!

  9. Tesla Model S (2019)

‘Ludicrous Mode’ I bet you’ve heard about this. The Tesla Model S has got this mode which can take it from 0-100 in 3 seconds! This 5-seater sedan has already set a benchmark in the EV industry and continues to be favourite among the community. Musk himself drives a 2019 Model S and says that they are working on improving the Ludicrous mode too. We are really curious to see what’s next!

  10. Tesla Cybertruck

Another Tesla which has created a lot of buzz in the automotive industry is the Cybertruck. This electric pickup truck has already achieved heights and is yet to go forward. Musk owns the first prototype and drove it to dinner with his partner brand Grimes in Nobu, Malibu. Although the windshield was shattered at the launch event, we guess Musk isn’t at all disappointed from this new-tech vehicle. People have loved it too and over 2 Lakh people have already booked it!
