Here we are with the final part of our series. Continuing, we have another set of hatchbacks that were on sale for a long time but now have been discontinued. While we saw several new notable launches in the segment, let’s take a moment and look at the candidates we lost:

Chevrolet Beat | 2010-2017
The first hatchback one on our list is the Chevrolet Beat. It was offered with 1.2-liter petrol or a 1.0litre diesel engine making 77hp and mated to a 5-speed manual transmission. It was like a funky little hatchback from the American manufacturer.

Like Ford, even Chevrolet did not do much to keep their cars updated. It just received a minor facelift that revamped the bumpers and rest of the interior, and everything was still the same. It was good performance-wise with a peppy engine for the city and a mileage upto 25kmpl.

Fiat Punto | 2009-2020
Punto was a powerful little car compared to the other hatchbacks we mentioned. It was powered by a 1.2litre petrol engine churning out 91hp and also available with a diesel engine. It was practical for the city and had adequate boot space too for long drives with a comfortable interior.

Punto offered a good package with an excellent engine & transmission & the interior also was up to the mark. But both Punto & Linea were discontinued as they could not meet the safety and emission norms with time. We still spot the Abarth Punto on the roads being revered by enthusiasts.

Nissan Micra | 2010-2020
Another one among discontinued hatchbacks is the Nissan Micra a little hatchback from Nissan that was in the market for 10 years. The fourth generation was running in India, and globally it is known as an efficient, reliable & easy to maneuver car with a decent fuel economy of upto 23kmpl.

While it did not sell as well as the competitors but, it was a decent underrated hatchback and the 2018 update added features such as the 6.2-touchscreen infotainment system and rear parking sensors too. It was easy to drive and park being a compact car it was well suited for the daily city commutes.

Volkswagen Polo | 2010-2022
Coming to the next we have the European hatchback that we will miss the most. VW recently discontinued the Volkswagen Polo along with the Vento. Vento was replaced by Virtus but we can’t have a worthy replacement for the Polo. it was an excellent car with a practical package suiting the daily city drives along with a performance catering to long drives with comfort.

It was among the enthusiast’s favourite cars and we have several cruising our roads as project cars are being built gradually part by part. VW Polo is more than just a car it is like the performance hatchback icon that ran in India for 12 years with a long list of happy owners.

Datsun Redigo | 2016-2022
Like the Nano, the Datsun Redigo was also an affordable little car. While Nissan has marked the 50,000 production milestone for Magnite they also announced to discontinue of their affordable car brand Datsun in India and halted the production of Redigo.

It was offered with two petrol engines: 799cc & 999cc respectively. Mated to a 5-speed manual/AMT transmission. It was not very powerful but had a decent fuel economy upto 20kmp, making it apt enough for daily errands.

Hyundai Santro | 2018-2022
Santro was India’s first tall-boy family car which has been again discontinued recently. The first generation was launched in 1998 and immediately became popular with the excellent performance & spacious cabin. With time it received several updates the first generation was discontinued in 2014 and Hyundai launched the second generation again in 2018.

The 2018 Santro was almost entirely different from the previous models but still had hints of the tall-boy design. It was offered with a 1.1-litre petrol engine making 67hp and even a CNG kit. It was an affordable entry-level car from Hyundai.

Toyota Etios Liva | 2011-2020
The Etios franchise was Toyota’s answer to launching affordable cars and it was an immense success in India. Having a Toyota sedan/hatchback at that price was a dream come true at that time. The hatchback counterpart Etios Liva was introduced later in 2011 a year later after the sedan.

Being a Toyota it was extremely reliable with low maintenance cost and you might still get your hands on one in a good condition. It had good interiors as well and offered a comfortable ride. This duo was discontinued in April 2020. This was the last one on our list of discontinued hatchbacks.
