Maruti Suzuki Vitara Brezza, a segment dominator, launched in 2016, remained at the top of the charts, in the compact SUV segment. Tata Nexon, Hyundai Venue, Mahindra XUV300 and other sub-compact SUVs tried to take on the sweet spot from Brezza, yet failed. And then came Kia Sonet. In the first month, within 10 days of launch, Kia Sonet came close to Brezza’s total month’s sales. And the second month in being, Kia Sonet made it to the first spot. But how did a car that has just been for months in the market take on the segment leader making it to the top? Well, let’s take a look at this case.

Kia Sonet is new to the market!
Indians love to buy and flaunt something that has been just launched. We have seen it in the Kia Seltos as well as MG Hector’s case too. And Kia Sonet is no exception. Indians saw something new with wild design elements a host of features (we’ll get to this part later) and that’s how Indians met Kia Sonet. Kia Motors made it possible with the extravagant marketing and the perfect time, the festive season. All this came together and made it possible for Kia Sonet to beat Maruti Suzuki Vitara Brezza in its own game.
The plethora of engine and transmission options!
Maruti Suzuki Vitara Brezza offers one engine option which is the K15B Petrol engine mated to a manual and an automatic transmission option. Well, the Kia Sonet on the other hand offers a plethora of options. There are 3 engine options: 1.0-litre turbo-petrol, 1.2-litre petrol and a 1.5-litre CRDi engine (and that too with 2 options, WGT and VGT). When it comes to transmission options, you get, 5-speed manual, 6-speed iMT, a 7-speed DCT and 6-speed AT. Why won’t someone go for a car with such a variety to choose from?
Competitive Pricing of Sonet
When the Sonet was revealed, the features it packed made everyone think that the prices will surely be on the higher side. But when Kia launched the SUV, the competitive pricing was a total stunner. Take a look:
The prices start at ₹6,71,000(ex-showroom). For your reference, the base variant for Maruti Suzuki Vitara Brezza starts at ₹7,34,000. Lower starting prices surely attracted the customers towards Kia Sonet.

The Plethora of Comfort and Convenience Features
Kia not only priced Sonet at par, but it also loaded it with features. Features such as 10-inch touchscreen infotainment, Bose 7-speaker system, ventilated front seats, smart air purifier, coloured instrument cluster, electric sunroof, front and rear parking sensors, tyre pressure monitoring system, ESC, 6 airbags and much more, Sonet is loaded up to the brim. On the other hand, Maruti Suzuki Vitara Brezza offers basic features. So, why not go for something that offers much more at almost similar pricing.
And the sales figures now!
Kia sold 11,417 units of Sonet in the month of November 2020. It’s sibling, Hyundai Venue had a total sale of 9,265 units. And then comes Maruti Suzuki Vitara Brezza which sold 7,838 units. It seems that Sonet has boosted the sales of Hyundai Venue too. What do you think? Let us know in the comments section below.
