Mahindra XUV400 vs MG ZS EV | Electric Car Shootout!

Electric vehicles are the new innovation. And many carmakers in India have already entered or are willing to enter the EV space. One such carmaker is the Mahindra and Mahindra. Recently after years of testing, Mahindra has finally unveiled its first electric car for the Indian Market. It is the Mahindra XUV400.

In the electric vehicle space in the Indian market, there are two most prominent names, Tata and MG. Let’s save Tata for later and check whether the offering from Mahindra will be able to surpass the MG ZS EV. So. before we further ado, it’s pitch both the cars head to head.

Like most of the electric vehicles in the country, the XUV400 also started off as a car with an internal combustion engine (XUV300). Meaning, it the majority of the external components and body structure from its donor vehicle. Similarly, MG EV also borrows most of its exterior clues from Astor, its IC counterpart.

However, the most prominent change on both the vehicles one may see is definitely the paint job. Apart from that, different styles of alloy wheels are also on the list. Next, on the list of changes is the closed-off grille. Now, the car only has one inlet for the cooling mechanism for batteries and the motor.

Hence it is important to have a powerful yet efficient motor that could set the power down on the tarmac. In this comparo, it is the Mahindra XUV400 that has the fastest 0-100 claimed time. This also has to do with peak torque of 310Nm which also is the best in class.

Like the exterior, other SUVs take a completely different approach to the interior. But both the vehicles share the same interior as their IC engine counterparts. But it is the MG that has better quality and a more spacious interior.

Price and Rivals

The variants of the Mahindra XUV400 have not been unveiled. But we anticipate that the one that was unveiled last week would be the top-end trim. And on the other end, MG Astor we are comparing is its top-end, exclusive trim.

Speaking of the rivals, as of now, there are not many electric cars in the country at this price point. But considering the offering, apart from MG Astor, Mahindra XUV400 competes with the likes of Tata Nexon EV, and Hyundai Kona. With that, we also expect the base trims of XUV400 to rival Tata Tigor EV.

Talking about prices, the prices for Tata Nexon EV MAX start at Rs. 17.74 Lakh for the base XZ Plus trim and goes all the way up to Rs. 19.24 Lakh for the ZX Plus LUX trim. As of now, the top-end exclusive trim of the MG ZS EV is priced at Rs. 25.44 Lakh. However, MG will launch its base Excite trim in July at Rs. 21.99 Lakh.

Considering the features on offer and the battery and motor, we expect the price for the Mahindra XUV400 to be somewhere around Rs. 13Lakh to 18Lakh (Ex-showroom).
