Mahindra XUV 400 EV vs. Hyundai Kona Electric

The XUV 400 EV has got our excitement touching the roof. Ever since Mahindra unveiled the electric SUV, all eyes are on the vehicle and how it pitches against major competitors.  So here’s the XUV 400 EV head-on with the Hyundai Kona Electric

So as far as the dimension goes, the XUV400 EV comes as a lengthier, wider, and taller SUV than the Kona electric despite a similar wheelbase. Even in terms of boot space, the XUV 400 EV offers a large 378 litres of space as compared to 332 litres offered in the Kona Electric. Thus in our opinion, the XUV 400 EV steals the show!

In terms of battery details and claimed range, the XUV 400 EV and the Hyundai Kona Electric are head-on with not much of a difference in terms of both battery specs as well as the claimed range. Both vehicles come with a similar battery back, with the XUV 400 EV’s pack being a little larger which gives it a slight edge of 4kms in range. In practicality, however, the difference is too thin to matter.

The performance sheet presents a mixed story. While the XUV 400 EV gets 14 PS more power, the Kona Electric gets 85 Nm more torque. This means that while the performance would be quite similar, the Kona will have more torque that will help it drive more efficiently, while the XUV 400 will have a better hand in acceleration. But again the difference is quite thin.

Equipped with a 50kW DC Fast Charger, the XUV 400 EV will power up from 0 to 80% in just 50 minutes, as compared to 57 minutes on the Hyundai Kona Electric. However, with a 7.2kW charger, the XUV 400 EV will take 6.5 hours to fully charge, while the Kona Electric will take about 6.1 Hours. However, from the 3.3kW charger/16A socket the Kona will take about 13 hours to charge, while the Kona Electric will take as much as 19 hours as it can draw a maximum of about 2.8kW. So as far as charging is concerned, we will give it to the XUV 400 EV.

While official pricing isn’t declared, the XUV 400 EV is estimated to be priced around Rs. 17 to 20 Lakhs, which can be a great deal over the Hyundai Kona Electric which sells for around Rs 23.84 lakh-24.02.
