There are just a handful MPVs in the Indian market which can comfortably take a family of 6 on a tour. The car which always comes to our head in this scenario is the Maruti Suzuki Ertiga and the Toyota Innova. Well, both of the MPVs are from the Japanese car makers the later one is of a different segment. Talking about the Ertiga, it can carry these people at a fairly low price and with almost the same comfort. How does the MPV from Maruti Do that? Let’s have a look.
Maruti Suzuki Ertiga | 2012
Before the Ertiga, the MPV segment was majorly owned and dominated by the Toyota Innova at its been long the car is here in the domestic markets. In 2012, Maruti Suzuki unleashed an MPV at an unheard price which was way below its nearest rival. Instantly the car became a hit. The car was offered with decent interiors and a fair list of features. That was coupled with two engine options. The sales of Ertiga never failed but still, Suzuki Decides to come up with a facelift.
Facelift Ertiga | 2015
In 2015, the Maruti launched the MPV’s facelift. The car got some subtle cosmetic changes on the outside and the major changes were under the hood. This time around the MPV came with the SHVS (Smart Hybrid Vehicle by Suzuki) tech. That is the convenient start-stop function to increase the fuel mileage of the car.
Second Generation | 2018
It wasn’t long that Maruti came up with the new generation of the successful MPV. In the year 2018 Maruti Suzuki updated the eartiga from the inside as well as the outside. The new generation Ertiga followed the same scheme as the new Dzire. On the engine front, the car was unchanged. It got the same engine options as before.
Powertrains and Transmission
Talking about the transmission before the rollout of the new BS6 emission norms, the car came with 2 engine options, petrol and diesel.
- In the pre-facelift versions, the petrol engine produced about 91hp and about 130Nm of peak torque.
- Whereas the diesel was the tried and tested fiat sourced Multijet motor producing 90hp and nearly 200Nm of peak torque.
- The facelift got a new 1.5-litre petrol engine with 104hp and about 138Nm of peak torque.
- The Diesel engine was unchanged just that it got the same SHVS tech as the facelift version. Though the diesel for the BS6 version of the car has been discontinued.

Verdict
Though many MPVs in the segment came but didn’t accomplish what Ertiga did a while back. These include the Honda Mobilio, Renault Lodgy and Mahindra Marazzo. Though Marazzo is a bit more expensive and is on hold for some time. The Maruti Suzuki ticks the right boxes which the car buyers including the taxi and the family buyers want. The practicality and the reliability of Maruti Suzuki is the icing on the cake.
