Be it airbag compliance, or the Bharat NCAP guidelines, the Indian government is rapidly pushing new safety norms in a bid to make Indian vehicles safer. In another step towards the mission, the Ministry of Road Transport and Highways (MoRTH) has issued a new notification, calling for standards of safety for tyres that are meant for passenger cars, light commercial vehicles (CVs), heavy trucks, and buses. Here’s everything about it.
Tyre Safety: The New Norm
As part of the Central Motor Vehicles (Tenth Amendment) Rules, 2022, MoRTH’s notification on safety standards for tyres meant for light commercial vehicles (CVs), passenger cars, buses, and heavy trucks, calls for compliance with wet grip, rolling sound emission, and rolling resistance.
Per the ministry, the new design of tyres to be fitting on board motor vehicles will take effect from 1st October 2022, while for existing tyre designs, this regime shall take effect from 1st April 2023. In a series of tweets, the ministry said, “ MoRTH has issued a draft notification proposing that the tyres of cars, buses & trucks shall meet the requirements of rolling resistance, wet grip & rolling sound emissions, as specified in Stage-II of the Automotive Industry Standards (AIS) 142:2019, amended from time to time”.

Why the Reforms?
The first thing after reading the notification, the first thing that comes to mind is the why behind the move. Well, to make things simpler, the Ministry explained that the rolling resistance of tyres has a direct relation to fuel efficiency. Rolling Resistance can simply be defined as the amount of energy a tyre uses over a defined distance in order to move forward. The rolling resistance coefficient highly affects fuel efficiency by as much as 30%.

The wet grip, on the other hand, stands as an additional safety measure related to braking performance in wet conditions and comes in handy for stopping, steering, and overall control and traction of your vehicle on surfaces that are wet.
When it comes to rolling sound emissions, it is the sound emitted from the tyres in motion and the road. While tyres that lead to excess noise contribute highly towards noise pollution, it also leads to an irritating driving experience.

According to the Ministry, “The standard shall align the tyre performance with regards to their sound emissions, rolling resistance and adhesion performance on wet surfaces (wet adhesion) with the Stage-II limits of European regulations. This will also enable the user to make an informed decision.”
Thus, with the passing of this resolution, India stands abreast with a similar regime prevailing in Europe that came out in 2016. Moreover, with this regime in place, India will also align with United Nations Economic Commission for Europe Regulation (UNECE)
