The mid-2010s was not a great time for SUVs in India. Brands were having a hard time coping with the ever-changing demands of the masses, and this resulted in everyone trying everything. One of these brands was Renault, and their experimental car was the Koleos. While it may have not done too well in India back then, Renault might re-launch the Koleos in India soon! Today, let’s talk about the Renault Koleos.

The OG Renault Koleos
Back in 2011, Renault launched the Koleos in India. It was a true European SUV and it came in 2 variants, 4×2 and 4×4. The 2L engine produced ~170HP at its highest and was mated to a manual and an automatic gearbox. For that time the Koleos was a pretty loaded car. It got front electric seats, dual-zone climate control, a split tailgate, keyless-go, and much more. The cabin was supremely comfortable and had tons of little details to make it a good place to be in.

Why was it discontinued?
Well, pricing was turning out to be a game-changer at that point, and the Koleos was not cheap. Costing almost Rs. 30 Lakhs on-road, the Koleos fell into an even more premium category than the Fortuner! Renault decided to focus more on affordable vehicles, and hence the Koleos was discontinued.

Will the Renault Koleos come back now?
There’s a very high chance that Renault might bring back the Koleos to India. It has been spotted testing around a few times and that’s a good sign. The timing for the Koleos is perfect right now, as more and more buyers are going ahead and making big purchases such as the Mahindra XUV700, Jeep Compass, Tata Safari, and the Toyota Fortuner. However, the pricing has to be perfect. If Renault can bring back the Porsche-looking SUV at the same price, it would be a very good move for them.
Do you think that the Koleos was the perfect car for India? Let us know in the comments below!
I am using a Koleos for past 7 years, waiting for the next generation model to be launched in India. Cost of Services & Spares is something which Renault needs to necessarily work upon to make the new model successful in India. Good time to launch a new Koleos model along with service and extended warranty packages for complete peace of mind. All the best.
Hey Rajesh
Even we are waiting for Renault to get some good machines back in India!
