The implementation of the BS6 emission norms was the turning point for many of the car manufacturers in India. From Skoda to Maruti Suzuki everyone ditched the diesel. Like the Maruti, Skoda too had a chance to go back to diesel but they didn’t. Instead, the Czech carmaker Skoda has decided to completely put the TDI engine to rest in India.
Bye Bye! TDI
Since May 2020, Skoda is not offering diesel engines in their line-up of cars. Instead, Skoda and Volkswagen have shifted to petrol-only engines, TSI to be precise.
- Before the new normal, Skoda and Volkswagen had a couple of diesel engines. The 1.5-litre TDI and a 2.0-litre TDI were a part of the companies portfolio.
- But now the total focus has shifted to turbo petrol engine instead of turbo diesel for India. However, the company will have diesel engines in the international market.
Why no diesel?
- Long story short, because of strict emission norms the cost of producing diesel engines was going overboard.
- Next, this updated cost was fairing a lot higher when considering the cost-effective automotive market in India.
- So, Skoda’s chairman Thomas Schäfer exclaimed of ditching the diesel engines.
What’s next?
As of now, Skoda was in control of all the naturally aspirated MPI engines. The car that used to come with a 1.6-litre MPI engine was the Skoda Rapid but this was before the BS6 era.
Now Skoda tells, in the upcoming years, they might take care of delivering the TSI motors to the entire Skoda and Volkswagen group.
Skoda India: The Future!
This is evident as most of the new vehicles from both the carmakers (Skoda and Volkswagen) possess a TSI engine. As of now, 1.0-litre, 1.5-litre and 2.0-litre TSI motors are a part of the companies profile.
Also, all the cars that arrive in the future will be powered by these TSI motors only. (like the Skoda Kushaq and the Volkswagen Taigun).
