Finally! it seems that Japanese carmaker Toyota has come up with something which they can call their own. Yes, it’s a bit weird but true. Toyota has recently filed a design patent in India for its upcoming Maruti Suzuki Celerio rival.
This hatchback has been named ‘Agya’. This new hatchback will be base on the Daihatsu Alya, Toyota Agya and Wigo which are already on sale in some west Asian markets.
Although looking at the design it does somewhat resembles the Celerio. The new tall-boy hatchback from Toyota also boasts a very sporty look which will definitely do the job whenever launched in India.
The Toyota Agya was first launched in 2012 and received its first facelift in 2017 followed by a second last year. Currently, the Agya is sold in Indonesia, South Africa, Sri Lanka and the Philippines.
What powers the new Celerio rival?
- The Indonesian variant, soon to become the Indian variant, boasts a 1.0-litre, 3-cylinder unit and a 1.2-litre 4-cylinder motor.
- Both the units generate 66 bhp and 89 Nm of peak torque and 87 bhp and 108 Nm of peak torque respectively.
- While transmission options include a 5-speed manual and 4-speed automatic gearbox.
What’s on the feature end?
- Huf! this feature list is quite aggressive and includes a massive front grille flanked by round fog lamps. sweptback headlamps, projector LED DRLs, alloy wheels, sloping roofline, rear spoiler and LED taillamps.
- On the inside, we get to see a touchscreen infotainment system, multifunctional steering wheel, engine push Start/Stop button, multiple ports, automatic climate control and whatnot.
- We believe that Indian spec will be similar to its Indonesian cousin.
India Launch & Rivals?
- Going by what’s on the table, Toyota plans to launch the agya by the end of 2021, if everything goes well.
- With its launch, the Toyota Agya will lock its horns with the Maruti Suzuki Celerio, Renault Kwid and the Maruti Suzuki Alto.
