5 Upcoming Affordable EVs: From Mahindra, Renault to MG!

As the new BS6 emission norms launching soon we are one more step closer to developing electric vehicles. The research and technology gone in developing electric vehicles are huge. This makes them expensive than their Internal combustion engine counterparts.

Currently, there are 3 electric vehicles on sale in the Indian market which are worth buying. Two of which cost more than Rs. 20 Lakhs making them unaffordable to many. So here are few upcoming electric vehicles that will not dig a deep hole in your pockets.

1. Renault Kwid ZE EV
   

   

   • The new Affordable EV from Renault is based on the same platform as the normal engine Kwid. It shares the same underpinnings with the exact same ques in the outside as the outgoing one.
   • The difference is of a new grille, redesigned bumper, and changes in the design scheme of the vehicle.
   • The Kwid ZE was first showcased at the Expo. The European version was first uncovered in the Dacia Spring Concept. Currently, the ZE is on sale only in China.
   • We expect the car to come with a 26.8kWh battery pack and claims a range of about 250 kms.
   • The car produces 44Ps of power and 125Nm of torque.
   • We think the car to have a fast-charging system that gives the vehicle 30% to 80% of charge in just 30 mins and the conventional charging takes about 4 hours for a full charge.
   • The car is expected to be priced way below Rs.10 Lakhs

2. MG E200 EV
   

   

   • The British brand MG first showcased this tiny car in the 2020’s Expo. The car is currently in the Chinese market under the Baojun brand.
   • The company claims E200 to have a range of about 250km which gives at least 200km of travel distance.
   • The fun part is that the car can accommodate only 2 people. E200 is soo short that it is less than 2.5m long.
   • The MG E200 is very unlikely to come to the Indian market but its longer version can come to the mix in the near future.

3. Mahindra e-KUV100 EV
   

   

   • The renowned Indian car manufacturer Mahindra showcased its small electric car the KUV100 in the 2020 Auto Expo.
   • The electric car gets its power from a 15.9kWh battery that claims a range of about 147km.
   • Even though the batter is big it powers a relatively less powerful motor that produces 54ps of power and about 120Nm of torque.
   • The good thing is that the car comes standard with a fast-charging system that is capable of charging the car to up to 80% in just 60mins.
   • It is priced a bit high at around Rs.9.5 Lakhs. Even though the prices are high the car doesn’t off the tech for the premium price.

4. Tata Altroz EV
   

   

   •  Like the other electric vehicles, this too was showcased in the 2020 Auto Expo by Tata.
   • The new electric vehicle after the Nexon EV is the Altroz EV. Like the Nexon, it is based on its internal engine counterpart.
   • Though the car shares the underpinnings from its internal combustion siblings it’ll share the same power train as the Nexon. The Nexon EV boasts of a 30.2kWh battery which powers an electric motor capable of producing 129ps of power and bout 245Nm torque.
   • The ARAI claims a range of about 312 kms on a single full charge.
   • We can expect the car to share the same features as that of the top-spec Altroz.
   • The price could lie between Rs.12 Lakhs to about Rs.14 Lakhs.

5. Great Wall Motors (GWM) R1
   

   

   • 2020 Indian Auto Expo saw the debut of many electric vehicles from different brands. The Chinese car manufacturer GWM being one of them.
   • Great Wall Motors showcased their one of the first micro-electric vehicle, the R1.
   • For the reference, the car is a bit short than Maruti Suzuki’s alto but larger in other dimensions.
   • GMW R1 is powered by two batteries a 33kWh and a 28.5kWh which gives the car a range of about 350Kms and 300Kms respectively.
   • The battery powers an electric motor that develops 48ps of power and about 125Nm of torque.
   • The top speed of the vehicle is limited to 100Km/h.
   • GMW R1 is offered with many features which include a 9″ touch screen, a tire pressure monitoring system and much more.
   • You can expect the car to come somewhere in 2022 and will be priced under Rs.10 Lakhs.
