6 Reasons Why India Prefers diesel SUVs over Petrol

Diesel-powered SUVs are in danger of extinction. Many automakers worldwide are closing their facilities to diesel engines due to environmental and exhaust pollution standards. Among the automakers who do it in India are Maruti Suzuki, Volkswagen, Skoda, Nissan, and Renault. Despite this, several businesses continue to produce automobiles using diesel engines. among others, Hyundai, Toyota, and Honda. In spite of sufficient demand, these businesses could or might not stop producing diesel. Despite that, diesel vehicles, especially SUVs, are still preferred in the country. So today, we’ll look at 6 reasons why India is in love with diesel-powered SUVs.

  1. Diesel engines are more frugal.

Being more frugal and returning more mileage depend on each other but are not the same. Efficiency is the quantity of energy produced during combustion, whereas mileage is the number of kilometres travelled in a given time. In other words, the amount of chemical energy that is converted into mechanical energy is efficient. As a compression ignition engine, diesel may thus produce more energy from the same fuel as gasoline.

Do you disagree? Okay, let’s establish some specific facts. Diesel fuel has a calorific value that is somewhat lower than gasoline (45.8 MJ/kg) at roughly 45.5 MJ/kg (megajoules per kilogram). On the other hand, diesel fuel is denser than gasoline and has a volumetric energy content of around 15% more (36.9 MJ vs. 33.7 MJ).

  2. Fuel costs for diesel are lower.

In addition, diesel fuel is cheaper to purchase as compared to gasoline, which means that automobiles with diesel engines not only offer greater mileage. For instance, Gurugram (Gurgaon) charges Rs. 89.96 for each litre of fuel. Compared to petrol, which has a litre price of Rs. 97.10. As a result, the vehicle’s operating expenses are incredibly cheap over time.

  3. Diesel SUVs have similar maintenance costs as petrol SUVs

The vehicle’s make and model influence the cost of maintenance. Compared to SUVs with petrol engines, the ones that run on diesel engines often cost more to maintain. But the difference is not that significant. Additionally, the average service cost of both vehicles is similar. What is different are the prices of critical spare parts.

This includes engine and transmission components. These parts are relatively more expensive compared to engines that run on petrol. Nevertheless, this is bound to happen; diesel engines have another trick up their sleeve.

  4. Diesel SUVs are Durable.

Instead of the otto cycle, diesel engines use the diesel cycle. This indicates that the fuel burns because of the temperature increase due to the compression. Hence, these engines are also known as compression ignition engines.

Because the engines use compression ignition, greater forces, vibrations, and tensions exist. Because of this, diesel engines are well-made and long-lasting. These automobiles will survive a long time if they are adequately maintained.

  5. SUVs with diesel engines offer more mileage.

Next up is Mileage. Mileage is among the primary reason customers go for diesel SUVs. Be out on the highway or city, cars with diesel engines always return more mileage than their petrol counterparts. For instance, Hyundai Creta is among the few SUVs in India that come with a diesel engine.

With that, Diesel also is offered with not one but two petrol engines. Considering the more efficient 1.3 -litre turbo petrol engine, it delivers a claimed average of about 18.3 kmpl. That is on a good day. But the same vehicle with a diesel mill returns a mileage of 25kmpl.

  6. Diesel SUVs are punchy.

Because of the way diesel engines are designed, they have way more torque than their petrol counterpart. It is easy for diesel engines to pull better in slopes than petrol engines. Hence, this is the choice of fuel in trucks.

But what this means in the SUVs? This means that occupants in the SUVs experience that sudden surge of torque that sticks them to their seats under hard acceleration (In many powerful diesel SUVs). This is what makes SUVs with diesel engines too much fun.

So, these are the 6 reasons why India prefers diesel SUVs over petrol SUVs. Also, Let us know what you think of diesel engines in the comment section below. Should they be put to the side, or would you like them to stay in the market?
