With the Indian government deciding to skip the BS5 emission norms and directly jumping to the new and more stringent BS6 emission norms seems to have been a desperate move in order to cope up with others or to mark its place in the global automobile diaspora.
The all-new BS6 emission norms came into effect from April 2020, and within 24 hours of coming into effect, these new emission norms have shaken the Indian automobile industry to its core. According to a leading media report over Rs 80,000 Crores have been invested in the research and development of new vehicles, components and engine to meet the new and more stringent or safer for both humans and environment norms. Many major carmakers such as Maruti Suzuki, Renault and the VW Group have even decided to discontinue some of there most popular diesel variants from their line-ups and as far as over 40 other diesel cars will go missing from the domestic markets. Tata Safari Storme -2.2-litre Varicor Engine
first on the list of 10 diesel cars to be discontinued in none other than the legend itself the Tata Safari Storme which is all set to end its 22 years old legacy. The Safari Storme cam powered by an impressive 2.2-litre Varicor diesel engine capable of pushing over 400 Nm of peak torque. This beast could do it all from climbing mountains to grinding the city roads. However, we can expect the Tata Safari Storme to make a ravishing comeback in the nearing future and bring back the old feeling of driving a car.

Renault Duster- 1.5-litre K9k Engine
The Renault duster came into existence in early 2013 and with its launch, it became an instant hit among the youth and turned out to be a major milestone for the French carmaker. The Renault Duster came equipped with a more powerful 1.5-litre K9k diesel engine and not just the Duster this 1.5-litre K9k diesel unit also makes its mark on the all-new Renault-Nissan line-up like the Micra, Captur and the Kicks. However, reports suggest that Renault will be bringing an all-new 1.3-litre turbocharged petrol unit replacing the out-going diesel unit capable of generating 153hp with 250 Nm of peak torque in the all-new 2020 Renault Duster soon to launch in the coming months.

Maruti Suzuki Ertiga- 1.3-litre MultiJet Engine
Much recently India’s largest car manufacturer Maruti Suzuki India private limited has decided to go all-petrol and with that said it is time to say goodbye to the diesel variant of the company’s most selling commercial vehicle. The diesel variant of the Ertiga featured a reliable Fiat-sourced 1.3-litre MultiJet diesel engine which came into existence with the Swift hatchback back in 2006. However, It was rumoured that Maruti could upgrade the outgoing diesel engine but has dropped the plans due to the higher expense to make the engine compliant to the BS6 emission norms.

Volkswagen Vento- 1.5-litre TDI Engine
It’s sad but true the VW Vento has also joined the list of 10 diesel cars to be discontinued list. According to Volkswagen’s India 2.0 plan the company plans to ditch its diesel line-up which also indeed includes the VW Vento mid-size sedan which came powered by a 1.5-litre TDI unit. The torque induced TDI unit which tuned out to a perfect with the Vento’s superlative handing made the car fun to drive. Additionally, the engine also made its appearance in the Polo, Ameo and the Skoda Rapid.

Audi Q5- 2.0-litre Engine
The new BS6 emission norms have not only taken a toll on budget brand but has also taken a few luxury brands under its shadow. The ultra-luxurious Audi Q5 has also joined the list of the top 10 diesel cars to be discontinued list. The Q5 premium compact SUV featured a 2.0-litre diesel unit which was known to generate the right amount of power and torque while also acting as a fuel saver. Not only that this designated 2.0-litre diesel unit also showed its margin in a number of Skoda-VW-Audi cars. It is for sure that this diesel motor will surely be missed but if we look at the bright side the new Audi Q5 now comes powered with a more powerful petrol unit which turns out to be more efficient and powerful.

Toyota Etios- 1.4-litre D4-D Engine
Its time to say goodbye to another impeccable engine and car combination the Toyota Etios which came powered by a 1.4-litre D4-D diesel which was eventually loved by commercial fleet operators for being spacious in nature and extremely reliable. Maruti Suzuki Vitara Brezza- 1.3-litre Multijet Engine
Yet another one from the Maruti Suzuki line-up to join the 10 diesel cars to be discontinued is Maruti’s first compact SUV the Vitara Brezza which made its debut in 2016 and since its launch the brand has managed to sell over 10,000 units of Vitara Brezza every month. The key attribute of the designated DDiS unit has made a huge difference with its competitive pricing. With that said Maruti introduced the petrol version of the Brezza sub-compact SUV at the recently held Auto Expo 2020 and gets a newly developed 1.5-litre K-Series petrol units which also underpins the Ertiga.

With sedan buyers tilting towards petrol options it has become really hard for the Japanese carmaker to still manufacture its 1.6-litre i-DTEC motor variant which surely is a robust performer and was only offered with a manual transmission and with the discontinuation of the diesel variant the Civic will only be sold with 1.8-litre petrol which comes paired to a CVT automatic.
