Hatchbacks are the best performing candidates of every brand and have served as the primary contributor to the rising sales figures. Certain key aspects such as the low ownership cost, easy manoeuvrability, and parking practicality make them the best contenders.

Maruti Suzuki WagonR
The Maruti Suzuki WagonR has been the company’s top-performing candidate for a significant while now. Since its launch in 1999, it has been an affordable choice and the first car for many. The third generation is now running on the roads with the CNG option, further raising the numbers.

Maruti Suzuki managed to sell 24,634 units of the tallboy which accounts for 31% YoY growth compared to the 18,757 units in the same period last year. The updates with more significant dimensions, new features, and enhanced fuel efficiency have upgraded the hatchback.

Maruti Suzuki Baleno
Baleno has been enjoying the top position in the premium hatchback segment. Maruti Suzuki even updated their candidate in February with new tech and cosmetic tweaks. The people have appreciated the updated Baleno.

However, they only managed to sell 14,520 units in April 2022, which accounts for a drop of 32% YoY growth compared to the 21,217 units in the same period last year. Despite the updates, this might not seem very promising, but it might pick up the pace soon.

Maruti Suzuki Swift
Swift has been known as the sporty hatchback since its launch in 2005. It has been among the best performers of Maruti Suzuki and has been immensely appreciated by the people throughout its generations with every update.

But despite the excellent record, the company recorded a drop of 37% in YoY growth with only 13,623 units sold in April 2022 compared to the 21,714 units in the same period last year. This can be the attention being diverted towards the updated Baleno and the ongoing semiconductor crisis.

Hyundai Grand i10 Nios
The only non-Maruti Suzuki car to make it to this list will be the Grand i10 Nios. The third generation of the Grand i10 is marked with the Nios badge, is the sporty competitor to Swift, and has been delivering well since its launch in 2019.

But again, like every manufacturer impacted by the semiconductor shortage, the figures have gone low. Hyundai managed to sell 9,687 units of their hatchback, which account for a 12% drop in YoY growth as compared to the 11,020 units sold at the same time last year.

Maruti Suzuki S-presso
The last hatchback on our list is again from Maruti Suzuki, the little S-Presso. This highly affordable hatchback can be seen as a successor of the Maruti 800, still running on the roads.

Critics might call it a micro-SUV, too, but it fits in the hatchback segment well. And its price tag has been the attractive central element with the high stance and seating. Maruti managed to sell 7,870 units of the car, accounting for a 9% YoY growth as compared to the 7,252 units sold at the same time last year.
