Ford and Mahindra entered a JV back in 2017 to share their technologies such as connected vehicle tech, electric vehicle tech and product development tech. This JV has led to Ford Ecosport getting the mStallion engine. Take a look at what the engine has to offer.
1.2-litre Mahindra mStallion Engine | Codename: G12
It is a 1.2-litre T-GDI (Turbocharged Gasoline Direct Injection) petrol engine from the mStallion family of engines from Mahindra. The engine will be a BS6-compliant unit which will produce 130hp of power and 230Nm of peak torque.
What will change in the Ford Ecosport?
The compact SUV from Ford was previously equipped with Ford’s 1.0-litre EcoBoost engine which was known for its performance. But the high price and low fuel economy were not able to attract a lot of customers. The new engine from Mahindra will produce 5hp of excess power and 60Nm of extra torque. For the transmission options, you can expect the EcoSport to get a 6-speed manual option and dual-clutch transmission option too.
Has mStallion engine been used before?
No, but it will be powering the Mahindra XUV300 which is due to get an upgrade this April. Ford Ecosport T-GDi will be launched in the first half of 2021.
Rivals of the Ford’s Compact SUV
The Ford Ecosport will be locking horns with Maruti Suzuki Vitara Brezza, Hyundai Venue, Tata Nexon and of course, the Mahindra XUV300. It will also have to go up against the upcoming Renault and Nissan offerings in the segment.
