All the carmakers on the globe are shifting to manufacture either all-electric vehicles or hybrid vehicles. Well, the carmaker who is a little late to this party is Alfa Romeo. Better late than never, Alfa Romeo has recently globally launched their first plug-in hybrid vehicle, Tonale.

Before we get on with the details, we like to clarify that hybrid vehicles are pretty different from plug-in hybrid vehicles and should not be confused. The new Alfa Romeo Tonale is a compact crossover and gets multiple choices of engines under the hood. More on that later.
With everyone’s focus shifting towards reducing fossil fuels and controlling vehicular exhaust emissions, PHEVs (Plug-in hybrid vehicles) are efficient, powerful, and comparatively less polluting. Tonale is one of the perfect examples. But what is the new Alfa Romeo Tonale like? Will it be launched in India? Let’s have a look.
Engine and Transmission | Alfa Romeo Tonale
Starting with the spotlighted aspect, the powertrain. Under the hood, the new Alfa Romeo Tonale gets multiple engine options. There are three options to choose from, a 130hp or a 160hp motor which come with a mild-hybrid system. The third is the one that gets the plug-in hybrid system.
Well, the talking point is the one that comes with a plug-in hybrid system. This brand new powertrain comes with a 1.3-litre turbo petrol motor that also does duties in the Fiat 500. With the engine, the crossover also boasts a 48V electric motor that is powered by a 15.5kWh battery.
The combined output of the engine and the motor sits at a whopping 275hp. This allows the Tonale to reach 100kmph from a standstill in just above 6 seconds. Also, this powertrain also can run on battery only mode for 60-80kms.
What’s new on the technology part?
The new Alfa Romeo Tonale gets multiple features to keep its occupants entertained on the go. Starting from a 10.25-inch touch screen infotainment system, which is of the current standards as it gets Android Auto and Apple CarPlay.
On the safety front, the new Tonale gets ADAS level 2 features, including adaptive cruise control, traffic jam assistance, auto park feature and much more.
The new Tonale also gets what’s called NFT (non-fungible token). An NFT is a digital certificate that is based on blockchain technology. This is where the owner’s content will create a confidential maintenance record of the vehicle. The new NFT feature will help improve the residual value of the car. Also, this could not be modified later.

Now comes the significant bit.
Will the Alfa Romeo Tonale be launched in India?
Tonale measures roughly the same as the Tata Harrier but is slightly short in height. This short height allows the vehicle to have better aerodynamic efficiency. Also, the company exclaims it gets equal weight distribution for better ride and handling experience from behind the wheel.

As of now, there is no news of the launch of the new Alfa Romeo Tonale, but if we had to guess, we’d put our money on somewhere around 30-40 Lakh (ex-showroom) price bracket.
