Recently, the Ministry of Road Transport and Highways signaled that three-point seat belts for all passengers in cars will be mandated. The MoRTH has been taking several measures for increasing safety in vehicles, this being one of them. While most cars do get a three-point belt for 4 passengers, the fifth one is mostly a two-point seat belt. Today let’s discuss more on three-point vs two-point seat belts.
-
What’s the difference?
So a two-point belt, also known as the lap belt goes over the lap of the passenger and wraps itself around the hip. In case of a jerk, the passenger will remain seated, but there might be sudden and severe movement in his/her upper body. A three-point seat belt goes over the lap, and also through the shoulder and chest of a passenger. This helps in keeping him/her completely in place in case of emergencies.
-
Why aren’t all belts three-pointed?
Well, it does cost a bit more to produce and install a three-point seat belt, as compared to a two-point. While this cost-cutting may seem negligible for one car, it can turn into millions when mass production is considered.

Three-point vs Two-Point Seat Belt- which is better?
Needless to say, a three-point seat belt is much safer when compared to a two-point belt. The compulsion of all 5/7 belts being three-pointed is a good one, it will increase the safety quotient for the middle passenger by a lot.
So this was a quick Three-point vs Two-Point seat belt comparison. Let us know in the comments, which safety features you think should be mandated!
