Auto Expo 2018: A Look Back At The Promises Made

Auto Expo 2018 was a star-studded show. The show saw the likes of Sachin Tendulkar, Akshay Kumar and many other celebrities.

Many companies launched the concepts of their cars at the Auto show featuring some exciting additions.

With most of the cars launched duly on time by the companies on time, and many are already plying on the Indian roads now.

But there are certain cars that increase the hype at the auto show but aren’t able to make it to the showrooms for sale and are somewhere forgotten.

So, let’s have a look at the cars which excited the audience with their looks and potential, although didn’t make it to the market.

Mahindra Stinger Concept

The Mahindra Stinger Concept was a new outlook for Mahindra. The concept car was revealed at the Auto Expo 2018 and did look good. The ruggedness of an SUV and the style element of a convertible made it worth a try.

The car seemed ‘straight outta Star Wars’ when it made an appearance at the 2018 edition of the car show. Some of the features which made the car stand out were the impeccable sleekness, the lower than ever hypercar territory ground clearance and futuristic looks.

The car didn’t make it to the roads for some obvious reasons, such as the low ground clearance.

Toyota C-HR

It was being speculated that Toyota might launch its small SUV, the C-HR for the Indian markets. The car, if launched would’ve rivalled the Nissan Kicks and the Renault Captur.

Although, the car didn’t come out of the planning phase for the Indian markets for whatsoever reasons.

Maruti Suzuki Swift RS

The Swift has already made a mark in the hatchback segment. The car is quite popular in the hatchback segment due to various factors that have spiked its sales figures.

The RS was expected to be launched by mid-2018 for the Indian car markets with a 1.0-litre Boosterjet engine. The car would’ve surely made the hatchback car segment, a tad bit spicier.

Suzuki already sells the 1.4-litre engine as Swift Sports in the European markets.

Mahindra Bolero Facelift

The homegrown brand was expected to launch its rugged and popular SUV, the Bolero by late 2018 or 2019.

The car was expected to sport a rugged ‘tank inspired’ look with some aggressive elements such as high ground clearance, flat roof and raised shoulders. The car could’ve been able to capture the urban and rural markets in a good way.

Mahindra Bolero’s current version is already preferred by the police forces across the country for its toughness and power. However, the car is expected to be launched at the 2020 Auto Expo.

Honda HRV

The Honda HRV was speculated to launch in the Indian car markets after its show at the Auto Expo 2018. The car was based on Honda’s ‘Exciting H Design’.

The car, if and when launched would’ve competed in the same segment as that of the Nissan Kicks and the Renault Captur.

Yaris Hatchback

Although Toyota launched the Yaris sedan in the Indian car markets, the Yaris hatchback didn’t see the light.

The hatchback would’ve launched at a price tag of ₹ 6 to ₹ 8 lakhs and could’ve been an exciting addition to the Indian hatchbacks segment. The Yaris hatchback was strategised to replace the ageing Liva hatchbacks which have been here for a while.

Renault Megane

Renault was expected to bring its sedan, the Megane with itself at the Auto Expo 2018, however, it didn’t. The car was expected to be priced at ₹15 – ₹18 lakhs and to compete with the likes of Honda Accord and the Toyota Camry.

Many experts suggested that the car was to be launched in late 2018 to replace the Renault Fluence. The sedan was expected to launch in the D-segment sedan cars i.e. the luxury sedan segment, but somehow it didn’t.

Mahindra teased the customers with the XUV Aero revealing at the 2016 Auto Expo. The car was acknowledged by many owing to it’s new and unique styling. The styling looked somewhat similar to BMW’s 3 Series Gran Turismo.

It was expected that Mahindra will launch the production-spec vehicle in the 2018 version of the auto show.

The styling of the car was capable enough to get your heart racing.

The South Korean carmaker displayed its entire international line-up at the 2018 motor show. The car was on display at the 2018 Auto Expo and excited many car enthusiasts for its arrival.

Although, the car is powered by a 3.3-litre V6 petrol engine generating 370 hp, making it one of a kind.

The German luxury carmaker is gradually moving to electric. The i8 has already made its mark and now it was the turn of the i3. The car was displayed at the 2018 version of the auto show but didn’t see itself coming to the Indian roads.

The i3 is powered by a 94Ah motor capable of producing 170PS of power and 250Nm of torque. The car provides a range of 180 kilometres on a single charge.

Kia Picanto

The Kia Picanto made its debut at the Auto Expo 2018. However, it couldn’t convert it into an official launch.

With the entire international line-up of Kia at 2018 version of the Auto Expo, the Picanto was expected to be a good addition to the cars that were to be launched. The car sports a peppy and compact look with a squared bonnet and sharp pulled-back headlamps.

It is still a mystery why the car didn’t make it to the showrooms, even though it was spied testing on the Indian roads.

Auto Expo 2020: What To Expect?

The Auto Expo 2020 might be a hit show with most of the companies betting upon their cars. Around 90 to 100 vehicles are expected to be unveiled at the 2020 segment of the car show.

BS6 and electric vehicles are expected to be the theme of the show as most of the companies are betting high on these two segments.

Let’s hope we get the cars that are promised and displayed at the Auto Expo 2020.
