Car Sales Report January 2020: It’s Maruti Yet Again

Car sales report for the month of January is out. Who won the race of sales? Well, the answer to this question remains the same. Maruti Suzuki once again, as always, takes the top five positions in the race. But there are some new players too. Kia Seltos has been a huge success. Let’s take a look at the sales.

    In January 2020, with a growth of 17% as compared to the previous year, the Dzire has remained on the top of the charts. The Dzire is powered by a 1.2-litre petrol engine which churns out 82hp of power and 113Nm of torque.

    The hatchback sold through the premium NEXA channel of the company has bagged the second position with 20,485 units sold in January 2020.

    This has been one of the most popular hatchbacks by the carmaker. Maruti was able to sell 19,981 Swift cars in the month giving it the third place in the list.

    This hatchback ruled the car sales for 15 years before losing it to Dzire last year. Still, it has managed to remain in the top 5 in the car sales report of January. The company was able to sell 18,914 units of the Alto.

    The car has been very popular in India amongst the families as well as the taxi segment. IT stood 5th with 15,232 units being sold in January.

  6. Kia Seltos

    This is where the chart starts looking a bit different. Kia entered the Indian market in August last year and has been a very successful flagship in the country. It sold 15,000 units in January. Kia has also brought down the waiting period of Seltos and also promised to bring a new model to India in every 6 months.

    The commercial vehicle segment of the carmaker is also strong as Eeco is still able to stay in the top 10 with 12,324 units being sold in January.

  8. Maruti Suzuki Vitara Brezza

    Kia Seltos was able to defeat the Vitara Brezza by a good 5000 units in terms of sales. This led to the fall of Brezza to the 8th position.

    The hatchback saw a decline in sales as compared to the same month in 2019. Hyundai is planning to bounce back into the market with Creta 2020 and Grand i10 Nios.

    The premium hatchback from Hyundai loaded with features was able to attract 8,137 customers in the month of January 2020.

Maruti Suzuki discontinued diesel engines in order to keep its cars BS6 compliant. But this does not seem to have affected at the sales.

The carmaker recently announced that it won’t be sending its cars for the Global NCAP crash test. But Indian customers still seem to be less inclined towards the safety aspect while buying the cars. Most of the Maruti cars in the list above are not even 2-star rated at the crash testing. Should we be worried to see such unsafe cars in the sales report and that too at the top positions?
