Back in December 2020, when the OEM announced that it will be pulling the plug on the CRV and Civic, along with the closure of the manufacturing facility in Greater Noida, rumours spread like fire that Honda is gearing up to leave India.

The reason behind Honda’s struggle is its relatively slow growth in the compact SUV segment that is dominated by the likes of Maruti as well as Hyundai. While the CR-V was discontinued due to negligible growth, the WR-V is also not doing so well for Hyundai.

However, despite all the rumours, the OEM has finally come forward, pressing upon its commitment to the Indian market. The automaker in a statement said that it had no plans whatsoever to shut down operations in India, and on the contrary, the OEM plans to scale up production and brand strategy in the coming months.

Speaking to PTI, Takuya Tsumura, CEO and President of Honda Cars India said that Honda is staying. Why would Honda leave the fourth largest automobile market in the world? We have been here for 20 years now and there is no reason to leave.

On its 2020 decision of closing the Greater Noida plant, the company said that the move was part of a bigger restructuring plan, and the company has a well-equipped facility in Rajasthan as well.

So for all the Honda fans and critics alike, Honda is here to stay and we mean it! Till then you stay pinned to the GoMechanic Blog for everything automotive.
