Read this article till the end to know how I saved 25% on a brand new car!
The search begins
Just like any other Indian customer, I was searching for a car that would suit my needs. My daily commute requirement was around 80km and therefore I wanted a car that would deliver good mileage! Now you can guess which dealership I walked into! Yes, I walked into the Maruti Suzuki Arena. There were many ongoing offers and discounts. Talking about mileage, I enquired for the mileage king- WagonR! At that particular time, the showroom offered me a WagonR VXi at 5.5Lakhs INR on-road after adding all the discounts they could give.

I had a budget of 5Lakhs and even a lower variant with a CNG kit won’t fit in. So, I was now left with a choice of buying an Alto. I didn’t want to buy that anyhow so I went on to look for other options.
Exploring the used car market
Talking about the car discounts available in the used car market, they are huge! You can get any car under any budget you might have. Talking about my story, I wanted something good under 5 Lakhs. Let me tell you very clearly, exploring the used car market is like a treasure hunt. You need to be very careful while you lookout for a good option in the used car market. I tried out many options but I always landed upon a vehicle with a tampered odometer reading. This disappointed me a lot. You really need to be an aware customer to get the right vehicle from the used car market.
The search continues
Well, my search was still on. I was still looking for car discounts on various carmakers websites and showrooms. Guess, that wasn’t the right time to buy a car as there were only a few offers which couldn’t make the car of my choice fit in my budget. WagonR was the perfect choice for me at that time. The car delivers an excellent fuel efficiency with whatever fuel you run it with. Be it petrol or CNG, WagonR doesn’t burn a hole in your pocket. Servicing isn’t a hassle too. WagonR gets you much lower bills than any other car would do. Needless to say, GoMechanic now looks after my car very well.
What is ‘Unsold Inventory’ or Factory Second?
Every year, each automaker manufactures lacs of vehicles. No doubt, the same amount of vehicles are sold every year too but there are some cars which remain unsold due to lack of demand or any other particular reason. I stumbled upon a WagonR that belonged to this category. During my search for a perfect car, someone told me about this way out. By choosing a car from the unsold inventory you can get the best of both worlds! Just to let you know, you can own a new car with a huge saving (25% in my case) just be exploring what the brand hasn’t been able to sell! Just think about it Hyundai used to manufacture the i10 in a yellow shade. Have you ever seen it on the roads often? Similarly, there are many other factors due to which cars remain unsold.

By now you might have guessed that I bought a WagonR from Maruti’s unsold inventory. The case with my car was that it was damaged during the loading process. My car’s left fender was re-painted due to the damage caused. Therefore, Maruti Suzuki couldn’t send it to the showrooms to be sold as a new vehicle. They got the car registered in their own name. Hence, the first owner of this particular vehicle was ‘Maruti Suzuki India Limited’.
here is the registration certificate for your reference.
Second Owner, First User! How?
Well, according to the paperwork, I was the second owner of this car. But believe me, no one had touched those pedals ever! Practically, I was the first user of this car! My car was a 2017 model Maruti Suzuki WagonR which had been lying in the plant for almost 9-10 months. This was due to a mere paint job it had undergone due to the mishap during the loading process. As stated earlier, Maruti Suzuki was the first owner but the car felt like new! Looking from a laymen’s aspect, it even had the plastic wraps on! What else? You could easily spot the vent spews on the tyres. These are the rubber hair (Spikes) which you generally find on a new tyre.
Pricing and Warranty
As mentioned above, the new WagonR VXi would cost me around 5.5Lakhs INR (on-road). This car from Maruti’s unsold inventory came with all the warranty inclusions just like a new car! For example, a car brand offers you a 3-year warranty and if you buy the unsold car after 1 year, you would still get a 2-year warranty on the same vehicle. Coming to the price, I bought this car for INR 3.99Lakhs! Yes, I ended up saving almost 1.5Lakhs on the same showroom-condition car! Well, I made it possible because I considered the practical aspects of the deal. What’s bad in saving a hefty amount just because the car has a re-painted fender? You will anyhow get it repainted sometime in the future. No one drives that well here. Accidents are bound to happen!
How to get such huge car discounts?
Usually, this happens around the end of each financial year. Each auto manufacturer puts an auction of their unsold inventory. For those thinking of visiting the auction, you can’t visit the auctions without due permits. Usually, the dealerships associated with the same brand are allowed to participate where they buy the car from the auction and put it on sale in their used car dealerships. Talking of car discounts, you can save anywhere between 15-25% if you go for these cars. This totally depends upon which car manufacturer you are choosing and how well you can crack the deal.
I got this car at an odometer reading of 148kms. Just to let you know, I saw this model at an odometer reading of 68kms only. It was the dealership who drove the car to the plant to get some paperwork done which lead to an increase in the reading. Usually, you get a new car at a comparatively lower reading but considering the price, even 148kms didn’t give me any pain. So my used car was nowhere less than a new car because no one had actually used it!

Wondering where to buy such cars? You can simply get in contact with someone in the manufacturing plant or the brand authorised used car dealership to get such a deal.
Ownership Experience
For those doubting if this article is promotional stuff, here’s a picture of my parents taking the delivery of our beloved family member. WagonR has been a part of my family for over a year now. I have driven 30,000kms till now and let me tell you the car still feels brand new! There has been no mechanical or electrical failure until now. The car was new, as they said. I could avail the huge car discounts only due to the tale I told you in the above section. This is a great way out for those looking for a budget car. You can own a new car at the price of a used car. Car discounts- do we actually need them anymore?
