First things first, the price. We expect the price of Hyundai Ioniq 5 EV to be near 50 lakh rupees. This is because Hyundai will drive it in India as a CBU model. It will be offered as a premium offering, and it will be Hyundai’s flagship model.

Hyundai Ioniq 5 EV: Exterior And Interior

Exterior

The exterior of this EV is quite distinct from other cars in Hyundai’s stable. The Hyundai Ioniq 5 EV comprises sharp cuts and lines. It nicely complements the bold and sporty alloy wheels and the funky yet sleek LED lights. It was first seen at the 2019 Frankfurt Motor show and looks very futuristic.

Dimensions

Dimensions for the Ioniq 5 EV stand at – Length of 4635 mm, 1889 mm in width, 1600 mm tall, and a 2999 mm wheelbase! That is nearly 50 mm more than the Gloster and just 61 mm less than the Carnival! And that too for a car about the size of Harrier! So space on the inside is quite excellent, thanks to the platform. Read more about the platform below.

Powertrain, Battery Pack, and Charging Options

Powertrain + Battery Pack + Specs

Hyundai offers the Ioniq 5 EV with 2 powertrain options in international markets.

  1. The first is the standard variant that gets a single motor capable of producing a power output of 169bhp and 350Nm of torque. It is a RWD (Rear Wheel Drive) setup, with an optional AWD setup as well. The battery pack is of 58 kWh, and has a claimed range of 385 km on the WLTP cycle. 0-100 km/hr is achieved in 8.5 seconds, which is a not so respectable figure, considering it would start from 50 lakhs and the Mini Cooper SE, which is also priced at 47.20 lakhs, does the same in 7.7 seconds.
  2.  However, the second powertrain option is better, offering a dual motor arrangement coupled to an RWD or an AWD. It delivers a power output of 306bhp and a MASSIVE 605Nm of torque! 0-100 km/h comes at a quick 5.2 seconds (now we’re talking!). This battery pack is of 72.6kWh, and has a claimed range of 481 km.

Hyundai Ioniq 5 EV Charging Time is Vey Less With The 800V Rapid Battery Charging Tech!
  1. The Hyundai Ioniq 5 EV gets an 800V rapid battery charging tech. This allows the car to charge ultra fast, and it manages to charge from 10% to 80% within a short span of 18 minutes. However, this can be done using 220 kW DC charger.
  2. The standard 10.9 kW charger can fully charge the car in 6 hours and 43 minutes using a level 2 charger.
  3. Hyundai also stated that upcoming EVs by Hyundai will also have the provision for home charging.

Please note that all these figures are for the global-spec model. Although we expect it to remain the same for India, it might be changed according to Indian consumers’ preferences.

BONUS: Pros Of Building An EV Platform From Scratch

The Hyundai Ioniq 5 EV is one of the few cars specially made from scratch as an EV and is not based on some Petrol/diesel car. It is built on a dedicated electric skateboard platform.

In fact, reports even suggest that Apple will use the Hyundai’s E-GMP platform for its Apple Car! Read all about it-

Here are some of the perks of building an all-electric platform from scratch:

  1. Better Cabin Space: Since they don’t have many parts that IC engine cars do have, such as a gearbox, catalytic converters, a large engine, radiator, etc… they need lesser space.
  2. No Hump at the back: There is no hump in an EV because it doesn’t need one. IC engine cars have the hump because of crucial components going through the hump. But EVs don’t have those components, which is why it’s not there in them!
  3. They are safer: EVs have an extra sheet of aluminium around its battery, which makes them safer in the event of crash. Also, since EV platforms carry Lithium ion batteries, rather than petrol/diesel, they posses a smaller risk of catching fire during a collision.
  4. Gives flexibility for developing other EV cars.
